Tissues Flashcards
(14 cards)
Tissues
A group of cells that function together to carry out specialized activities
Nervous
Detects and changes in the body + responds by generating nerve impulses
Muscular
generates physical force needed to make body structures move+generate body heat that uses ATP to produce the force
elongated fibers
Epithelial
Covers body surfaces + lines hollow organs, body cavities, and forms glands
Connective
Protects, supports and binds organs. Stores energy as fat and provides immunity
Germ layers
Endoderm, Mesoderm and Ectoderm
Neurons(nerve cells)
Conduct nerve impulses
Neuroglia(nerve cells)
Support functions
Excitable cells
Ability to respond to certain stimuli by producing electrical signals such as action potentials
Skeletal
Attaches to bones (stripped)
performs voluntary movement or contractions (conscious)
Fibers vary in length and are roughly cylindrical in shape
Cardiac
Has striations
Involuntary movement or contractions not consciously controlled
Intercalated discs that are unique to cardiac muscle fibers
Smooth muscle
Walls of hollow internal structures
Non-Striated
Involuntary control
Connective
Must abundant and widely spread
Binds tissues together
Protects+insulates internal organs
Compartmentalize and transport
ECM in connective tissue
The material located between widely spaced cells
Consists of protein fibers and ground substances
Secreted by cells/determines tissues qualities
Supplied with nerves
