Tissues Flashcards
(25 cards)
What are tissues?
Collection of cells
How are epithelial tissues classified?
By shape of cells and number of layers
Epithelial tissues
arranged in sheets, bound together with little extracellular material (egg like)
Simple Squamous Epithelium
Single, flat layer
found in lining of body cavity, air sacs
Simple Cuboidal Epithelium
Single, thick layer
Found in kidney glands
Simple Columnar Epithelium
Single, long layer (linear)
Found in digestive tract
Pseudostratified Ciliated Columnar Epithelium
one long layer with imbedded cells (fake double layer)
found in respiratory tract (surrounded by cilia)
Pseudostratified Columnar Epithelium
one long layer with imbedded cells (fake double layer)
found in male urethra
Stratified Squamous Epithelium
Numerous layers of thick cells
found in lining of mouth and esophagus
Transitional Epithelial
Layers of varying cell shapes (able to stretch)
Found in urinary bladder
How do connective tissues appear?
cells spread out, suspended in gel with fibers surrounded by extracellular material
How many major types of connective tissue are there?
2: Connective tissue proper and special connective tissue (blood, bone, cartilage)
Areolar Connective
beneath skin and between muscles
spread apart by fibers (spiderweb)
Dense Connective
white collagen in ligaments
very fibrous, no visible cells
Reticular Connective
Various branched fibers surrounded by cells
found in lungs, liver, spleen
Adipose Connective
Enlarged cells with nucleus in corner
fat cells found around heart and kidneys
Bone Connective
tree stump look
found in skeleton
Blood Connective
free flowing blood cells
found in heart and arteries
Hyline Cartilage Connective
suspended cells with no visible fibers
found in nose tip
Elastic Cartilage Connective
large 2 or 4 cells with visible fibers
found around ear
Fibrocartilage Connective
fibrous with few cells suspended, looks like fur
found at meniscus
Skeletal Muscle tissue
light and dark bands seen in long, cylindrical rows (tire track)
Found on top of bones
Smooth Muscle tissue
long spindles (space travel?)
found in wall of blood vessels
Cardiac Muscle Tissue
light and dark bands if long branched cells with more obvious nucleus
found around heart
