tissues Flashcards
(22 cards)
Simple epithelia
Single layer of cells covers basal lamina
delicate and found in protected areas
4 types of tissues
Epithelial
connective
muscle
neural
name, function, locations

Simple Squamous epithelium
found in serous membranes, blood vessels, alveoli of lungs
function: reduces friction, controls vessel permeability, performs absorption and secreation
squamous cells are flat pancake like, simple is a single layer
name, function, location

stratified squamous epithelium
location: skin surface, lining of mouth, throat, esophagus, rectum, anus, vaginia
function: provides physical protection against abrasions, pathogens, and chemical attack
multiple layers of flat cells to the surface
name, function, locations

simple cuboidal
function: limited protection, secreation, absorption
location: glands, ducts,kidney tubules, thyroid
single layer of cube shaped cells
name, function, locations

Stratified cubodial
function: protection and secreation
Location: sweat glands, mammary glands
multiple layers of cube type cells
name, function, locations

Transitional epithelium
function: permits expansion and recoil after stretching
location: urinary bladder, ureters
cells do not thin out as you get closer to surface
name, function, locations

simple columnar
function: protection, secreation, absorption
location: stomach lining, intestines, gall bladder, uterine tubes
ciliated you can see hairs, non ciliated you can not see hairs
single thickness column looking cell
name, function, locations

pseudostratified columner
function: protection, secreation
location: mucous membranes of respiratory and male reproductive tracts.
always has cilia, appears to be stratified, can see multiple nucleus but they all actually touch the basement
name, function, locations

stratified columner
function: protection and secreation
location: small regions of throat, anus, mammary glands, salivary gland ducts
name, function, locations

Areolar connective tissue
location: underlies skin and other epithelia
functions: seperates tissues, absorbs shocks
features: disorganized array of cells in an open framework; much volume is ground substance
name, function, locations

adipose tissue
function: storage of lipids, padding, insulation, absorb shocks
location: deep to skin and mesothelia, around eyes and kidneys
fetures: usally pale yellow or white in color
name, function, locations

Reticular tissue
function: provides supporting framework
location: liver, kidney, spleen, lymph nodes, bone marrow
filled with reticular fibers
name, function, locations
