Tissues Of Body Flashcards
(21 cards)
Purpose of tissues:
To help maintain homeostasis
Tissues defined:
A group of cells and surrounding material that work together to form a function
Types of tissues:
four total
- Epithelial tissue
- Connective tissue
- Muscle tissue
- Nervous tissue
Define epithelial tissue:
“One free surface” (always)
“bark of a tree”
“Skin”
The two types of epithelial tissue:
- Membranous
Covering and lining - Glandular
Within covering and lining
Purpose of membranous epithelial tissue: (five functions)
- Protection
- Filtration
- Secretion (of cells own product)
- Absorption
- Excretion (of waste)
What type of free surfaces does the membranous epithelial tissue cover?
- Internal and external skin
- Body cavities
- Joint capsules
- Hollow organs
- Lines ducts
- Forms glands
- Interior lining of blood vessels & respiratory, digestive, urinary, and reproductive systems
Simple epithelial tissue
- Single layer
- -Selective barrier
- -secretes substances onto free surfaces
Stratified epithelial tissue
- multiple layers
- -protected surfaces
- –Keratin
- –Cilia
Keratin
An insoluble protein found in the hair, nails, and other keratinized tissues of the epidermis
Cilia
Are numerous, short, hairlike projections that extend from the surface of the cell; helps move substances.
Shapes of epithelial:
Four total
- Squamous-flat
- Cuboidal-square
- Columnar-long and narrow
- Transitional-flat to cuboidal
Types of glands:
- Endocrine - secretes into blood
2. Exocrine - takes secretions away
Exocrine gland secretes:
Mucus Sweat (sudoriferous) Oil (sebaceous) Digestive enzymes Earwax Saliva
Endocrine gland secretes:
Hormones --from ---pituitary (master gland) ---thyroid ---adrenal Directly into blood stream Ductless
Connective tissue
Supporting fabric of the body
Purpose of connective tissue?
- Major transport sys
- Primary location of stored energy
- Main source of immune response
- Makes compartments for other structures
- Binds together, supports & strengthens other body tissues
- Protects and insulates internal organs
Characteristics of connective tissue?
- Non-living material between cells aka “matrix”
- Cells widely spaced
- Usually not found on body surfaces
Types of connective tissue?
Four
- Liquid
- -matrix; plasma; blood - Soft (semi-matrix)
- -membranes; fat - Fibrous
- -tendons (muscle-bone); ligaments (bone-bone); linings (around bone/muscle); coverings; walls (vocal cords) - Hard
- -cartilage (hyaline, fibro, elastic); bone (early skeleton vs adult.. Ossification)
Types of muscle tissue?
- Skeletal - movement & heat
- Cardiac - heart
- Smooth - digestive system
2&3 - involuntary
Nervous tissue?
- Detects changes in the external and internal environment
- Initiates movement and/or glandular secretion
- Neuron (nerve cell) conducts nerve impulse through irritability and conductivity
