Titrations Flashcards

1
Q

Why do we carry out titrations?

Q

Describe the 6 steps of titration

A

1) Put dilute hydrochloric acid into the burette
2) Add sodium hydroxide solution (the alkali) to a conical flask, then add a little indicator
3) Place the flask on a white tile
4) Record the burette start reading
Add acid to the alkali until it neutralises (changes colour)
5) Record the burette end reading
6) Repeat until concordat results are obtained

Q

Which indicator is often used for titrations?

A

Phenolphthalein is often used - it changes from pink in alkali to colourless in acid. Universal indicator is not suitable as it has a range of colours
