Drug
A drug used to treat, prevent or cure disease
Medicine
An unwanted change in the body that was not the main purpose of the drug.
Side Effect
Can be psychological or physical. When the body becomes addicted to a drug.
Dependence
When the body gets used to a drug and needs more and more to get desired effect
Tolerance
Sickness when the body no longer has a drug it is addicted to .
Withdrawal
Medicine you can buy without a doctor’s orders (Tylenol, Advil)
Over the Counter Medicine
Medicine you can only buy if you see a doctor first (Inhaler, Antibiotics)
Prescription Medicine
Any behavior that can have an unhealthy result, getting “high” makes you more likely to make these choices
Risk Behaviors
When a person feels the effects of drugs or is “under their influence “
Intoxicated
Using a drug the wrong way on purpose or to become intoxicated
Drug Abuse
Using a drug the wrong way unintentionally
Drug Misuse
A drug is breathed into the lungs and gets into the blood through the alveoli. This method effects the body quickly
Inhalation
A drug is swallowed and gets into the blood through the stomach and intestines. This method effects the body slower
Mouth
A drug enters the blood directly by use of a syringe. This method effects the body the fastest.
Injection
A drug enters the body through the skin or mucus membranes in the mouth or nose. This method acts slower
Absorption
The stimulant drug found in tobacco
Nicotine
Tobacco that is chew in the mouth
Smokeless Tobacco
Smoke that comes from someone else’s cigarette or cigar. It can harm a person who doesn’t smoke just as much as someone who does.
Secondhand Smoke
A disease of the lungs where the alveoli become unable to function
Emphysema
A condition similar to a severe cold that occurs over time to a smoker. It doesn’t go away until the person stops smoking.
Chronic Bronchitis
A depressant drug that is found in some beverages (drinks). A person must be 21 to legally drink.
Alcohol
The amount of alcohol in a person’s blood
Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC)
Weight , how fast a person drinks, gender, food in stomach & type of alcohol
