Definition of toleration?
A
‘A fair, objective and permissive attitude toward those who’s opinion, practises, race and religion differ from one’s own’

How did the notion of toleration come about?
A
- Rose out of the relationship between the state and the individual
- Locke argues the state cannot dictate the nature of belief for its citizens
- Influenced the liberal notion of private and public sphere where the private sphere is a universal right based of negative freedom

What does the public and private sphere allow?
A
Allows peaceful coexistence between cultures and the state

Why is toleration not sufficient for peaceful coexistence ?
A
- neutral public sphere is a representation of the majority
- People cannot access the culture structure necessary for personal autonomy
- This leads to social exclusion and even economic leading them to be treated as second class citizens
- Toleration is an an extension of the liberal individualistic values

How has toleration been manipulated by the west?
A
‘Toleration has moved away from a practise of morality towards a political practise to justify the most illiberal actions’
