Via light or sound waves
What do we mean by magnetic energy store?
The energy stored when repelling magnetic poles are pushed closer together, or when attracting magnetic poles are pulled further apart.
What do we mean by thermal energy store (also known as ‘internal energy store’)?
The thermal energy store refers to how much energy a substance has, it includes two stores of energy:
1The kinetic energy store
2The potential energy store
(you don’t need to know what the potential energy store is, just that it is part of the thermal energy store)
What do we mean by chemical energy store?
The energy stored in chemical bonds, such as those between atoms.
What do we mean by kinetic energy store?
The energy an object possesses due to its motion.
What do we mean by gravitational potential energy store?
The energy an object has due to its height in a gravitational field.
What do we mean by electrostatic energy store?
The energy stored when repelling charges have been moved closer together or when attracting charges have been pulled further apart.
What do we mean by elastic potential energy store?
The energy stored when an object is stretched or squashed.
What do we mean by nuclear energy store?
The energy stored in the nucleus of an atom.
As an object falls, which energy stores does energy pass between?
As an object falls, energy will pass from its gravitational potential energy store to its kinetic energy store.
What is kinetic energy?
The kinetic energy of an object is the energy that it possesses due to its motion.
Which two measurements are required to calculate the kinetic energy of an object?
The mass and velocity of the object.
What is the formula for kinetic energy?
Ek=1/2mv^2
What are the units for kinetic energy?
Joules(J)
What are the units for mass when calculating kinetic energy?
kilograms (Kg)
What are the units for velocity when calculating kinetic energy?
metres per second (m/s)
What is gravity?
Gravity is an invisible force that pulls objects towards each other.
What is gravitational potential energy?
An object’s gravitational potential energy is the energy it has due to its height in a gravitational field.
What is weight?
An object’s weight is the force acting on that object due to gravity.
What is gravitational field strength?
Gravitational field strength is the strength of a gravitational field around an object.
What is the formula for weight?
Weight (W) = Mass (m) x Gravitational field strength (g)
W = mg
What are the units of weight?
Newtons (N)
What is the formula for gravitational potential energy?
Gravitational potential energy (GPE) = Mass (m) x Gravitational field strength (g) x Height (h)
GPE = mgh
