  • 1967 Gibraltar sovereignty referendum
  • 99.64% voted British and 0.36% voted Spanish
  • Six Gibraltarian lawyers published a letter on 15 March 1968, advocating settlement with Spain
  • They had met with Spanish foreign affairs and that provoked widespread public hostility
  • 6 April; 1000 people rioted and attacked property - police lost control with 22 police injured

  • In the early years, this area was taken by both the Morrocan and Spanish before the British
  • Taken by the British with the Treaty of Utrecht in 1704
  • The British began adding things like fortress walls and battlements on high ground due to the soft wet ground
  • The construction of casemates was started after the great siege and finished in 1817
  • The area was used for public events like military parades and public executions
  • 20 + 21st century
  • Developed from temporary housing for Morrocan workers during the border closure to a refurbishment of pubs, bars and restaurants with hosting various cultural events.
