Topic 1 Hazardous Earth Flashcards
(30 cards)
Landslide
Where there is a huge movement of rock down a steep sloap.
Earths core
The innteemost part of the earth.
Climate change
Any significant change in the earths climate over a long period of time
Orbital changes
Orbital changes are variations in the way the Earth moves round the Sun
What are the three orbital changes
Stretch, Tilt, Wobble
What are the 3 natural causes of climate change
Orbital changes, Volcanic activity, Solar output, Asteroid collisions
Evidience we have for natural climate change
Tree rings, ice cores, Historic records
Tree rings
Most trees produce ine ring in their trumks every year and its thickness depends of the climate so when it colder/warmer the scientists could tell.
Ice cores
Scientists would drill into ice sheets to get long cores of ice as ice sheets are made up of layers of ice one is formed every year
Historical records
Things such as paintings, diaries alowed scientsist to see how the climate was back then
What is the NATURAL greenhouse effect essention for
Keeping our planet warm
What human activities are making the greenhouse effect stronger
Farming: such as farming libestock, rice paddies, deforestatiom
Industry: requires lots of energy lots of co2 emmissions
Energy: burning fossil fuels
Transport: cars, planes, ships ect.
Evidence human acivity is causing climate change
Declining Arctic Ice Global tempreture rise Extreme weather events Seal level risw Warming oceons
Define a tropical cyclone
A tropical cyclone is an intense low pressure weather systems with strong wind that spiral in the middle.
Features of a tropical cyclone are
The eye, the eyewall
The eye
This is the centre of the cyclone it is caused by very dense air
The eyewall
This surrounds the eye and this si where all the swirling and strong winds are
What are 2 physical hazards of tropical cyclones
Intense rainfall and landslides
What are the impacts of physical hazards on people
May lead to some people drowning,
Many people are left without homes,
Little jobs availible unemployemnet rises
Food shortage
What are the impacts of the physical hazards on the environment
Damages trees,
Wildlife is killed,
What are some strategies to prepear and to respond to tropical cyclones
1) defences: such as sea walls
2) evacuation: getting people out of danger
3) forecasting: use satalite technology
What cyclone hit America (developed country)
Hurricane Katrina
What cyclone hit Myanmar (developing country)
Cyclone nargis
What is the earths structure (clue 4 parts)
The centre of the earth is the core
Around the core is the mantle
The outer layer of the earth is the crust
The crust is divided into slabs
