Topic 1 : Movement into and out of cells Flashcards
Define diffusion
The net movement of particles from an area of low concentration to an area of high concentration
Is diffusion an active or passive process?
Passive
What are the 3 factors affecting diffusion?
- temperature
- surface area of molecule
- concentration gradient
Define osmosis
The movement of water molecules from an area of high water concentration to an area of low water concentration, through a partially permeable membrane
Is osmosis active or passive
passive
Define active transport
Active transport is where substances move from an area of low concentration to high concentration.
Is active transport passive or active and describe concentration gradient
active, meaning it requires energy and it goes against the concentration gradient
How does active transport work?
Transport proteins are used to pick up ions or molecules or atoms from near the cell membrane, which then performs active transport.
give examples of active transport
respiration, when plants absorb mineral ions
glucose is absorbed to the blood from the small intestine
