topic 12 communicable diseases Flashcards
(60 cards)
communicable diseases are those that can
be spread between organisms
what are communicable diseases spread by
pathogens
four main categories of pathogens
bacteria
viruses
protoctista
fungi
how can bacteria harm humans
-release toxins
-enter host cells to prevent them from functioning properly
toxins
are chemicals that damage host cells
structure of virus
-genetic material wrapped in a protein structure called a capsid
-have attachment proteins to attach to host cells
-some contain a lipid envelope
how do viruses reproduce
virus attaches to host cell and passes through the cell membrane
the virus copies itself using the enzymes of the host cell
how do viruses damage us
-prevent host cells from functioning normally
-replicate before bursting and destroying cells
how do fungi damage us
-the process of digestion can damage host cells when they release enzymes and digest material around them
-some produce toxins
how do Protoctista damage us
take over cells and break them open
what do protoctista require to transfer disease
a vector
direct transmission
pathogens can be transferred directly from one organism to another
examples of direct transmission
direct contact
airborne droplets
indirect transmission
passed from one organism to another using an intermediate
examples of indirect transmission
food and drinking water
vectors
contaminated objects
factors that increase the risk of animal communicable diseases
living conditions
climate
social factors
pathogen tuberculosis is caused by
bacterium
organisms affected by tb
humans
cows
pigs
badgers
effect on body by tb
damages the lungs and supresses the immune system
mode of transmission of tb
airborne droplets
contaminated food and drink
pathogen bacterial meningitis is caused by
bacterium
organisms affected by bacterial menengitis
young children and teenagers
effect on body by bacterial menengitis
damages membranes of the brain and can cause blood poisoning
made of transmission of menengitis
airborne droplets
