TOPIC 2 Flashcards
topic 1-4
What occurs in the process of photosynthesis?
Solar energy from the sun is converted into chemical energy in the form of glucose.
Write the overall equation for photosynthesis using words.
Carbon Dioxide and Water in the presence of sunlight is converted into Glucose and Oxygen.
Write the overall equation for photosynthesis using chemical formulas.
6 CO2 + 6 H20 → C6H12O6 + 6 O2
What does photosynthesis require in addition to water and carbon dioxide?
Sunlight.
What is the principal pigment of plants?
Chlorophyll.
What do chloroplasts contain that are saclike photosynthetic membranes?
Thylakoids.
What is a granum?
Stack of Thylakoids.
What is the region outside the thylakoid membranes in the chloroplasts called?
Stroma.
What are the two stages of photosynthesis called?
Light-Dependent and Calvin Cycle (Light Independent).
How does NADP+ become NADPH?
Two electrons and a H+ are added.
Where do the light-dependent reactions take place?
Thylakoid.
Why is it important for water to split in the light-dependent reaction?
To get H+ so that NADPH can be made, e- are created, and to get H+ in a high concentration to make ATP.
What are the products of the light-dependent reactions?
O2, ATP, NADPH.
Describe the process of a light dependent reaction.
hint: think of the diagram
-photosynthesis begins when pigment is absorbeed in photosystem II
-hydrogen atoms are taken into photosystem II using energy b/c it beging forces from low to high concentration
-the electrons thwn move through the electron transport chain (ETC) from photosystem II to I
-water is split to refill the the space in photosystem II w/ knew e- to pull more hydrogen in
-once the e- are in photosystem I they ETC to transfer electrons to the electron carrier NADP to make NADPH
-meanwhile the hydrogen (h+) are moving naturally from high concentration to low concentration through the ATP synthase which uses the hydrogen to gain a energy and a phosphate group
-therefore it goes from ADP to ATP
Why are plants green?
the chlorophyll absorbs blue and red wavelengths and reflect majority of green wavelengths
What are the three steps in a light-independent reaction?
Carbon fixation
reduction
Replacing RuBP
What are the stacks of thylakoids called?
Granum
Which of the following is NOT present in a light dependent reaction?
a) transport of elecrtons
b) Chemiosmosis
c) splitting of oxygen
d)production of ATP and NADPH
c) splitting oxygen molecules
answer:the splitting of water molecules creates oxygen and is split to give photosystem 2 electrons
What part in the chloroplast absorbs and reflects light?
Chlorophyll
