Topic 3 Flashcards
(15 cards)
What is period on the periodic table?
- Horizontal rows
- Organize elements according to their atomic number
What is a group of the periodic table?
- Vertical columns
- Organize elements according to the number of valence electrons they possess
Where are metals found on the periodic table?
- Left of the stair case
Where are nonmetals found on the periodic table?
- Right of the staircase
Where are metalloids found on the periodic table?
- They border the staircase
What are the properties of Metals?
State
- Solids at room temperature
Appearance
- Shiny, luster
Conductivity
- Good conductors
Malleable/Ductile
- Very malleable and ductile
What are the properties of Nonmetals?
State
- Some gases, some solids
Appearance
- Not shiny
Conductivity
- Bad conductors
Malleable/Ductile
- Brittle, not ductile
What are the properties of metalloids?
State
- Solids at room temperature
Appearance
- Can be shiny or dull
Conductivity
- Some good, some bad conductors
Malleable/Ductile
- Brittle, not ductile
What is an alkali metal, and where is it found?
- Extremely reactive
- Rarely found in pure form because of how easily they react with other elements
- Found in group 1
What is an alkaline earth metal, and where is it found?
- Less reactive than alkali metals
- Found in group 2
What is a Noble gas, and where is it found?
- Non reactive elements
- Found in group 18
What is a Halogen, and where is it found?
- Extremely reactive
- Gases at room temperature
- Found right on the black line
What is the electron dot diagram?
- Electron dot diagram, or “Lewis diagrams”, is used to show the number of valence electrons an atom possesses. Elements with unpaired electrons are capable of reacting with other elements. Those with a single unpaired electrons are typically more reactive than those with with multiple unpaired electrons.
What is the characteristics of physical properties?
- A physical property is any property that can be observed or measured without forming a new substance.
- Color, texture, state, malleability, smell, boiling point, density, viscosity, solubility, conductivity, mass
What are the characteristics of chemical properties?
- Chemical properties are any property that describes how a substance reacts with another substance.
- Reactivity, combustibility, stability, enthalpy of formation, pH(acidity/basicity), toxicity
