Topic 3: Heart and Circulatory Flashcards
(105 cards)
Heart Location
Located in the thoracic cavity, mediastinum, slightly left of midline, between lungs.
Heart Body Cavity
Pericardial cavity, a subdivision of the thoracic cavity.
Parietal Pericardium
Outer fibrous layer of the pericardium enclosing the heart.
Epicardium (Visceral Pericardium)
Inner layer of pericardium, adhering to heart surface.
Functions of the Heart
Pumps blood, delivers oxygen/nutrients (systemic circuit), facilitates lung gas exchange (pulmonary circuit).
Pulmonary Circuit
Blood from right ventricle to lungs via pulmonary arteries, oxygenated, returns to left atrium via pulmonary veins.
Systemic Circuit
Blood from left ventricle to body via aorta/arteries, deoxygenated blood returns to right atrium via veins.
Superior Vena Cava
Large vein carrying deoxygenated blood from upper body to right atrium.
Inferior Vena Cava
Large vein carrying deoxygenated blood from lower body to right atrium.
Pulmonary Trunk
Artery carrying deoxygenated blood from right ventricle to lungs.
Pulmonary Arteries
Branches of pulmonary trunk carrying blood to lungs.
Pulmonary Veins
Veins carrying oxygenated blood from lungs to left atrium.
Ascending Aorta
Initial aortic portion carrying oxygenated blood from left ventricle.
Right Atrium
Receives deoxygenated blood from the body.
Right Ventricle
Pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs.
Left Atrium
Receives oxygenated blood from the lungs.
Left Ventricle
Pumps oxygenated blood to the body.
Tricuspid Valve
Also called the Right Atrioventricular Valve (Right AV)
Prevents backflow from right ventricle to right atrium.
Bicuspid Valve
Also called the Mitral Valve, or Left Atrioventricular Valve (Left AV)
Prevents backflow from left ventricle to left atrium.
Pulmonary Semilunar Valve
Also called the Pulmonary Valve
Prevents backflow from pulmonary trunk to right ventricle.
Aortic Semilunar Valve
Also called the aortic valve
Prevents backflow from aorta to left ventricle.
Endocardium
Innermost heart layer, smooth endothelial cells in contact with blood.
Myocardium
Middle, muscular heart layer responsible for contraction.
Image only highlighting myocardium slice of left ventricle.
Right Auricle
Ear-like flap of right atrium, increases capacity.
