Q

Name the main things that the body regulates:

A

Temperature - so that the reactions do not go too fast or too slow. The enzymes which control all the reactions in the body are affected by temperature.
Water content - so that reagents dot. Get too dilute or too concentrated.
Blood sugar levels - glucose is necessary for energy, but damages cells if it becomes too concentrated, so keeping the level steady is important. Glucose levels will also affect the concentration of body fluids, and if these become too concentrated, harm can result. Failure of the body to control sugar levels result in a disease, called diabetes, which can be fatal if not treated.

1
Q

The body needs to keep certain conditions inside constant. What is this done by?

A

This is dine by a special chemical called hormones.

2
Q

What are hormones

A

Hormones are chemical messengers, which are produced in certain places in the body but have their effects in other places. Hormones are proteins, and they are carried around the body in blood.

3
Q

What is negative feedback?

A

The way in which hormones control the levels of factors in the body is by a process known as negative feedback.

4
Q

How does negative feedback work?

A

If a factor increases, a chain or events in set in motion which causes the factor to lower again.

If a factor gets too low, another chain of events is set in motion which causes the factor to rise again.

5
Q

Give an example of negative feedback?

A

An example of negative feedback, is how blood sugar levels are controlled by two hormones, insulin and glucagon.
