Types of Web Users Based on Skillset
- Digital Immigrants: Those who didn’t grow up with the web and so learned how to use the web e.g. boomers
- Digital Natives: Those who grew up with the web and have intuitive use of the web e.g. millennials
Types of Web Users Based on Mindset
- Digital Visitors: Use the web as a tool, using it for defined tasks
- Digital Residents: See the web as a place, to have an online identity, and connect with people
VLE
(Monolithic) Virtual Learning Environment
Such as Blackboard. Make use of the web for educational purposes using a singular, centralised service offering all necessary tools
PLE
Personal Learning Environment
Alternative to how VLEs use the web for educational purposes that instead focuses on aggregating a variety of web services into a personalised learning environment
Edupunk
An alternative attitude to traditional, institutionalised education models that emphasises a DIY approach and the use of free, open-source technologies for learning
cMOOC
Connectivist Massive Open Online Course
An example of an Edupunk approach. It is a type of MOOC based on the principle of connectivism, a learning theory that emphasises social learning and networking through community
False Assumptions about the Web for Education
Familiarity ≠ Understanding ≠ Utilisation ≠ Knowledge
i.e.
- Familiarity with the web does not mean students will understand how to learn with it
- Understanding of the web does not mean students/teachers will effectively utilise it
- Utilising the web does not mean students are guaranteed to gain knowledge from it
3 Categories of Digital Skills
- Technological: The ability to explore new technological concepts in a flexible way
- Ethical: The ability to interact with the web in a responsible way
- Cognitive: The ability to access, select, and critically evaluate information
Digital Literacy
The ability to critically and effectively use digital tools to access, evaluate, create, communicate, and act, while reflecting on the process.
Levels of Digital Literacy
- Level 1 - Digital Competence: Skills, Concepts, Approaches, Attitudes
- Level 2 - Digital Usage: Applying skills in a professional application
- Level 3 - Digital Transformation: Applying skills to innovate and create
5 Categories of Digital Literacy
- Photo-visual Literacy: Ability to fluently interpret visual instructions and messages
- Reproduction Literacy: Ability to create meaningful work or interpretations by integrating existing independent pieces of information
- Hypermedia Literacy: Ability to maintain spatial orientation while navigating the hyperspace
- Information Literacy: Ability to critically evaluate information to identify erroneous and biased information, even when from a seemingly authoritative source
- Socio-emotional Literacy: Willingness to share data and knowledge with others to collaboratively construct knowledge
Perspectives (Views) of Digital Literacy
- The Naïve View: Digital literacy skills are their own branch of skills
- The Moderate Sceptical View: Digital literacy is a continuation of learning and existing skills
- The Sceptical View: Digital literacy is about culture, becoming part of a whole rather than individualism
