Topic 7:Ecology Flashcards
(13 cards)
what is a habitat?
the place where an organism lives.
what is a population?
all the organisms of one species living in a habitat
what is a community?
the populations of different species living in a habitat
what is an ecosystem?
the interaction of a community of living organisms(biotic)with the non-living (abiotic)parts of their environment
what are abiotic factors?
non-living factors of the environment
what are biotic factors?
living factors of the environment
what do plants need to survive?
->light
->space
->water/mineral ions fromthe soil
what do animals need to survive?
-> space(territory)
->food
->water
->mates
what is interdependence?
within a community species depend on other species for survival
what does a food web show?
a diagram of what eats what.
what is a stable community?
a stable community is where all the species and environmental factors are in balance so that population sizes remain fairly constant.Eg:tropical rainforests
Name 7 abitoic factors with an ecosystem:
- carbon dioxide levels for plants
- light intensity
- oxygen levels for aquatic animals
- temperature
- soil pH and mineral content
- moisture levels
- wind intensity and direction
name biotic factors
*availability of food
* new predators arriving
* new pathogens
* one species outcompeting another so the numbers are no longer
sufficient to breed
