Topic 7 Magnetic Fields Key Terms Flashcards
(12 cards)
Magnetic Flux Density (B)
Measure of strength of field, in Tesla (T)
Magnetic Flux
Value that describes the magnetic field/ magnetic field lines passing through a given area, in Wb
Magnetic Flux Linkage
Magnetic flux multiplied by number of turns N, of a coil
Magnetic Field
Region of space where a charged particle experiences a force
Faraday’s Law
Magnitude of induced emf is equal to the rate of change of flux linkage
Lenz’s Law
The direction of induced current is such as to oppose the motion causing it
Peak Value
Maximum value, distance from equilibrium to the highest or lowest point
Root mean Square Value (RMS)
The average of all the squares of the possible values. Gives you an effective value of the current or voltage output
Time period
Time taken to complete one full cycle
Frequency
The number of complete oscillations passing through a point, per second
Flemming’s Left Hand Rule
Describes motion of a current carrying conductor in a magnetic field
Flemming’s Right Hand Rule
Describes an induced current due to a moving conductor in a magnetic field
