why do positivists favour statistics?
- representative - cover a very large scale, some cover whole population, allow for generalisations
- reliable - compiled in a standardised way by trained staff, allow for comparisons
why do interpretivists dislike statistics?
- lacks validity - crime stats aren’t always recorded which creates a dark figure of crime
- lacks verstehen - don’t get reasons behind the statistics

- difficult to interpret - contain old language so make it difficult to understand

- verstehen - can give insight into personal experiences

- not reliable - may not be from a credible author, can easily edited
- not representative - documents can go missing
