- lost the power of speech (on and off) from March 1923
- often wheelchair bound

- his body was embalmed and was put into his tomb (turned into a shrine)
- his brain was sliced into thousands of segments so future scientists could study his ‘genius’
- funeral was a huge staged ceremony (against Lenin’s wishes) - organised by Stalin
