Topic 8 Acids, Bases, and Salts Flashcards
(29 cards)
What do acids contain
hydrogen ion (H+)
What do bases contain (2)
metal oxides (O2-)
metal hydroxides (OH-)
What is an alkali
A soluble base
What are indicators used for
Determine if a substance is acidic or basic
Result of indicators for litmus
Litmus
- Colour with acid: red
- Colour with base: blue
What is the pH scale
measure of the concetration of hydrogen ions present
Which values of pH tells you what?
pH < 7 = acidic
pH 7 = Neutural
pH > 7 = Alkaline/basic
Why are pH meters a more accurate way of determining the pH of a solution?
pH meters are able to give accurate readings to 0.01 of a pH unit
What does a reaction of acid with metal produce
Acid + metal —-> Salt + hydrogen
What does a reaction of acid with metal oxide produce
Acid + metal oxide —> salt + water
What does a reaction of acid with metal hydroxide produce
Acid + metal hydroxide —> salt + water
What does a reaction of acid with metal carbonate produce
Acid + metal carbonate —> salt + water + carbon dioxide
How is acidic soil neautralised
Adding quicklime to water produces slaked lime, which is an alkali and so neautralised the acidic soil
Which type of oxide is basic
Metal oxide
What is the pH of a solution involving metal oxides
Alkaline (more than 7)
Which type of oxide is acidic
non- metal oxide
What is the pH of a solution involving non - metal oxides
Acidic (less than 7)
What are neutural oxides
Oxides that show neither basic or acidic properties
What are amphoteric oxides
Oxides that are able to act as an acid or base
(produces salt and water)
Know how to carry out titration calculation using mole method
OK
Know all the Testing for cations, testing for anions and testing for gases
Define neutralisation
When an acid reacts with a base, forming salt and water
Know all the solubility of salt rules
Alright
If the salt you want to produce is soluble, which reactions can you use?
an acid + metal
an acid + metal oxide
an acid + metal carbonate
an acid + metal hydroxide
