Topic 9- Part 1 (Test for ions) Flashcards
Why are tests for ions unique?
-Help determine which ion is present
Flame test for ions
-Dip clean nicrome wire into HCI (clean it further/get rid of impurities)
-Place ion on nicrome wire
-in flame
What colour does lithium ion go in flame test?
Red
What colour does sodium ion go in flame test?
Yellow
What colour does potassium ion go in flame test?
Lilac
What colour does calcium ion go in flame test?
Orange-red
What colour does copper ion go in flame test?
Blue-green
Sodium hydroxide test for ions?
-Add a few drops of sodium hydroxide
-to 1cm^3 of metal ion
What colour does aluminium ion go in sodium hydroxide?
-white precipitate
-Dissolves in NAOH
sodium hydroxide
What colour does calcium ion go in sodium hydroxide?
-White precipitate
What colour does copper ion go in sodium hydroxide?
-Blue precipitate
What colour does Iron II ion go in sodium hydroxide?
-Green precipitate
What colour does Iron III ion go in sodium hydroxide?
-Brown precipitate
What is the chemical test for ammonia?
-Add ammonium nitrate
-Add sodium hydroxide
-Heat
-If damp red litmus paper turns blue
litmus paper must have water on t
Test for carbonates?
-Add carbonate + HCl (produces carbon dioxide)
-Bubble gas poduced through limewater
-If limewater cloudy carbonate
Test for sulfates?
-Add dilute HCl to sulfate to bind with impurities
-Add barium ions to sulfate
-If white precipitate
Test for halides?
group 7
-Add dilute nitric acid (impurities)
-Add silver nitrate
forming different colour precipitate
