Introduction
In 1914, British rule was fairly secure. The tripartite British strategy, instituted after the mutiny in 1857, of coercion, collaboration and limited concession where necessary remained effective. Crucially, Britain remained in firm control of the Indian Army - ensuring that it retained a complete monopoly on the use of force.
Intro nationalism
However, the challenges to British rule were increasingly prominent. Nationalism was growing fast amongst the bhadralok (the educated, westernised and urban middle classes of India) and this posed a growing threat. This was made particularly clear by the growing violence of some nationalist groups (e.g Abhinav Bharat) and the attempted assassination of the viceroy in 1912.
