(42 cards)
climate of Hunter Valley? factors that mitigate?
subtropical- one of the warmest- climates in Australia— regiond IV- mitigated by high amounts of humidity, rain/monsoon! (but can cause rot) and wind (northeast from tasman bay/pacific); cloud cover; backdrop of brokenback mtns
hunter valley soils-broke fordwich
sandy, alluvial soils - better for semillon, chard
hunter valley soils- pokolbin
weathered red basalt volcanic on ends/elevated hills of brokenback mtns- good for shiraz
canberra climate? geographical feature?
continental- mild- against snowy mountains
tumbarumba climate?
continental (cool, alpine) basalt slopes of the Snowy Mountains- good for sparkling
highest GI?
new england (orange highest region overall)
orange min elevation and defining geographic feature and soils?
600m; mount canabolas - extinct volcano- basalt soils
warmest to coolest? hunter valley, riverland, riverina
Riverina>Hunter Valley>Riverland (swam warmer than all)
warmest GI in Australian?
swan valley
hastings river winkler scale region?
V! most rainfall during growing season
rivers through riverina?
murray, lachlan
winkler scale records what? what are the limitations?
mean daily temp but limitations- doesnt consider many other factors including: sun exposure, latitude, precipitation, soil, extreme weather- frost/hail etc
port phillip
mediterranean: cooled by wind - cold polar southwesterlies; proximity to water; elevation for some- macedon
yarra valley climate? different topograpahy btwn upper & lower- how effects wine style?
cool maritime (region I) Lower Yarra- north- warmer- valley floor sandy loam soils - wines plumper and less aromatic; Upper Yarra- south- cooler, higher elevation-red basalt. Pinot Noir more defined and mineral
driest GI in the Port Phillip zone?
Geelong ; and spring frosts and wind damage can be especially challenging here
Macedon ranges elevation?
300 and 800 metres above sea level. 400 and 600 meters in elevation; highest in the Port Phillip zone and Macedon Ranges is the coolest region on the Australian mainland- extremely cold in windswept south-east and very cold in its north-west granite boulders of the Cobaw Range (part of macedon) in the North ; slate and gold-bearing gravels to the North West.
coolest GI on the Australian mainland?
Macedon Ranges- key is night time coolness
macedon ranges soil
volcanic, granite, alluvial
Heathcote climate, geo features? soils?
dry, warm, continental; more pronounced variation in elevation (than bendigo) due to the ridgelines of the Mount Camel Range; and difference in soil- on east- strip of red earth rich in 500-million-year-old Cambrian volcanic greenstone
what geological/climatic feature allows for ungrated vines in Goulbourn
alluvial, sandy soils along Goulburn River (no phyllox)
climate of nagambie lakes? what features mitigate?
warm continental- inland lakes and lagoons helps to moderate
rutherglen climate?
hot continental (region iii); Murray River northern border.
Grampians climate
cool, arid, moderate high elevation. end of Great Dividing Range (sparkling wine)
Barossa Valley climate/soil ?
warm continental (region III) 100-300 meters - flat valley floor, loamy clay, good for retaining water during dry summers.
