300 and 800 metres above sea level. 400 and 600 meters in elevation; highest in the Port Phillip zone and Macedon Ranges is the coolest region on the Australian mainland- extremely cold in windswept south-east and very cold in its north-west granite boulders of the Cobaw Range (part of macedon) in the North ; slate and gold-bearing gravels to the North West.

Q

coolest GI on the Australian mainland?

A

Macedon Ranges- key is night time coolness

18
Q

macedon ranges soil

A

volcanic, granite, alluvial

19
Q

Heathcote climate, geo features? soils?

A

dry, warm, continental; more pronounced variation in elevation (than bendigo) due to the ridgelines of the Mount Camel Range; and difference in soil- on east- strip of red earth rich in 500-million-year-old Cambrian volcanic greenstone

20
Q

what geological/climatic feature allows for ungrated vines in Goulbourn

A

alluvial, sandy soils along Goulburn River (no phyllox)

21
Q

climate of nagambie lakes? what features mitigate?

A

warm continental- inland lakes and lagoons helps to moderate

22
Q

rutherglen climate?

A

hot continental (region iii); Murray River northern border.

23
Q

Grampians climate

A

cool, arid, moderate high elevation. end of Great Dividing Range (sparkling wine)

24
Q

Barossa Valley climate/soil ?

A

warm continental (region III) 100-300 meters - flat valley floor, loamy clay, good for retaining water during dry summers.

25
Eden Valley climate
cooler - higher elevation 400-600m - red clay with granite outcrops- water scarcity (and salinity)
26
Mc Laren Vale climate?
warm dry mediterranean; South Mt. Lofty Ranges to east; Gulf of St. Vincent to the west; windy, warm climate alleviates fungal disease pressure but drought/water supply issues. some dry-farmed, but many irrigation from recycled wastewater from suburbs of Adelaide
27
McLaren vale different geological structures, or ‘terranes?
The Ancient Rocks: Ancient bedrock Sand and Sandstone: This terrane includes the subtypes Maslin Sands, Pirramimma Sandstone, Ochre Cove Formation (red and yellow sandstone), and Semaphore Sand (beach sand) Limestone Country Clay Plains of Aldinga The Piedmont: Alluvial deposits Talus Slope: Variable soils near the Willunga Fault Alluvial Flats
28
clare valley
warm continental (warmer on paper) elevation helps cool- 400-600m; diurnal shift -spring frost can be problem. dry - pests not issue- low rainfall in growing season, little groundwater-many dry-farmed vineyards, but drip irrigation more common today.
29
polish hill soil ?
blue slate bedrock like mosel
30
adelaide hills GI climate?
cool, rainy, elevation - ridges of South Mount Lofty Ranges; sandy loam
31
coonawarra climate/soil
cool mediterranean; terra rossa soil
32
riverland climate?
hot, arid continental but viticulture possible bc fertile, sandy soils along river - irrigation
33
margaret river climate/soil
warm mediterranean with maritime influence; dry summers and rainy winters—marginally warmer than Coonawarra or the Médoc; waters: Geographe Bay, Indian and Southern Oceans; Leeuwin-Naturaliste Ridge, a band of rolling hills running 90 km north-south from Cape Naturaliste to Augusta
34
eastern boundary of Margaret river?
The “Gladstones Line”—the line of longitude 115° 18’ E—established the modern appellation’s eastern border, essentially following alongside the Whicher Range.
35
how Margaret River subregions are divided?
drainage direction for rivers and creeks- corresponded to the direction of air flow systems.
36
warmest & greatest diurnal variation margaret river subregion?
Treeton- inland
37
geographic features of Margaret River?
Margaret River, Blackwood River; Geographe Bay, Indian and Southern Oceans; Leeuwin-Naturaliste Ridge, a band of rolling hills running 90 km north-south from Cape Naturaliste to Augusta
38
Margaret River soils
gravel and sandy loam over granite and gneiss; Wilyabrup best- red gravelly loam
39
Great Southern GI climate- diff subregions?
Coastal denmark & albany - strongly influenced by cool Southern ocean breezes moving northward from the Antarctic, and diurnal temperature range is minimal; inland GIs more continental
40
wairau valley climate/ soil/factors
gravelly soils, alluvial , free draining, richmond ranges (north) , Wither Hills (south) protect from rain.
41
southern valley, marlborough climate/soils
Valley floor/ rise to Wither Hills (north) and Black Birch Range. soils more clay, hold more moisture than wairau. cooler/drier
42
awatere valley climate/soils
driest/coolest/windiest/most southern; alluvial gravel river terraces; clay and sandstone subsoils on the wider river plains
