Farrand Field

A
  • Considered the Backyard of CU Boulder
  • Point out some of the residence halls that surround the field
  • Traditions that take place on Farrand: WelcomeFest, Band practice, BeInvolved Fair
  • Story about traditions: when I first met my friends at CU boulder, we all waited in line for like an hour to get wristbands for welcomefest because we forgot until the afternoon! It was a long wait but i met a ton of new people in line and created some inside jokes with my friends!
  • Typically on Farrand: Hammocks, pick-up games of ultimate frisbee, soccer, football, spikeball, dogs, slack-lines
  • Story about Farrand: One of my favorite things to do out here is to sit out here with my HW when its sunny out
  • Campus is covered in blanket of WiFi, do homework anywhere
  • Wardenburg Health Center: Full service pharmacy, x-ray services, medical clinic, physical therapy, and nutrition services.
  • CAPS: Counseling and Psychiatric Services:Free counseling for students, from the big stuff to the small stuff. Located in C4C, Wardenburg, and Williams Village
  • Imig Music Building: Newly renovated music building, has studio spaces, practice rooms, and classrooms. You do not have to be a music major to participate.
  • Students are required to have health insurance whether that is your private insurance or the Anthem Gold Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) - a plan exclusively for CU Students

Center for Community

A
  • This is the Center for Community, or as most students call it, the C4C
  • This is one of our large student hubs on campus that features centralized key student services and programs on the upper floors and the largest dining center on campus.
The C4C dining hall has 8 stations including Italian, a grill station, perian, and more!
  • Story: My favorite station is Dessert section of the C4C. it has the best soft serve ever! and they always have pastries and cookies
  • Meal Plans: All first-year students living in the residence halls are required to have a meal plan. There are multiple different meal plan options with varying swipes per week
  • Munch Money is similar to campus cash, and essentially works like a debit card with a balance stored on the students’ Buff OneCard, and it cannot be refilled. It can be used at many cafes and shops on campus (i.e. WeatherTech, Farrand Market, The Bakery, etc)
  • Grab-n-Gos are located throughout campus and are great options for picnics, hiking, quick meals, and stocking up at the end of the week.
  • My favorite Grab-n-go is Cu on the run! At grab-n-gos one meal swipe = one entree and 2 sides or 4 sides on their own
  • Allergies: All of our dining venues use our A9 allergen labeling system. This means that we label foods for the top 9 allergens as well as gluten. This enables students with food allergies to have a variety of foods available to them across campus.
  • We also offer Libby dining hall, my personal favorite which is completely peanut, tree nut, wheat, and gluten free. This is an excellent option for students with these allergies. However, it is not the only dining option available to allergic students.
  • Offices and Services housed in the C4C: these include Campus Card Services, Career Services, Center for Inclusion and Social Change, Disability Services, International Education, and the Office of Victim Assistance
  • Nutrislice: online menus and nutritional info

Residence Life/ Hallett Hall

A
  • Our campus spans 2 miles and we have 24 residence halls throughout campus which we divide into three neighborhoods - Central, Kittredge, and Williams Village. All of our Residence halls are on campus, co-ed and most include gender-inclusive restrooms
  • We house about 8,000 students, around 95% of them are first-year students. First-year students are required to live on campus for 2 semesters
  • We do offer several different room types (single, double, triple, quad, and quint with community bath, the same options with private bath, and some suite options), but most rooms are doubles with community bath
  • If you want to learn more about each residence hall and the application process I would advise that you check out the housing website or stop by their office (C4C S300)
  • We are all about to go into the showroom. Within the showroom, everything you see is included except the CU gear, which includes the bed, desk, dresser, lockable filing cabinet and micro-fridge-freezer
  • When we go into the show room, lets look through and meet back in the lobby altogether, that way it doesn’t get to squished inside.
Now we’re gonna go out the back door and talk about Residence life staff & support

Residence life staff & support

A
  • I currently live in Hallett, the hall we just walked through. I have loved every second of it! Me and my roommate didn’t know each other before school but we got randomly assigned to live together. We ended up joining the same Greek life organization and we still get coffee together!
  • Resident Advisors (RAs): there is at least one per floor and they are there to provide support in all aspects of life during a student’s first year. They support students by providing their residents with events and mental health checks known as ‘Buff Chats.’
  • Community Assistants (CAs): these are the assistants that work at the front desk and are there to help students (e.g. temporary key cards, renting equipment, checking out cleaning supplies, etc.).
  • Hall Director (HD): these are live-in professionals who are responsible for the residence halls.
  • Residence hall staff is available 24/7. They can help with getting locked out of your room or if you have a housing-related need.
  • There are three levels of security to the residence halls: the door to enter the building, the door to enter your hall, and the door to enter your room
  • There is laundry in every building and the machines are free to use! (Detergent not included)
  • Roommate selection: 3 different types - mutual selection, CU portal selection, or random selection
  • Mutual Selection – if you already know who you want to live with; both students must be assigned to the same residence hall, and both students must request each other as roommates during the housing application
  • CU Portal Selection – After you are assigned your residence hall, you can login to the MyCULiving Portal and meet other students assigned to the same residence hall; you can find someone this way and confirm a roommate
  • “Random” – the Housing Office uses your lifestyle preferences survey profile and assigns a roommate
  • We also have an accommodations process if students need extra equipment or a specific space for a disability-related need.

Q

Academics/ Duane Physics & Astrophysics

A
  • Faculty office hours: All professors have office hours, and these are an opportunity to go in and talk with the professor about course content, quizzes and tests, and other questions.
  • Office hours are also a great way to get involved in research or to work for a professor’s department. Go in and talk to these professors that you are interested in working with/for—also a great way to get recommendation letters!

-Recitations: These are when your large lecture-style courses will break out into sections of around 20 students and meet at a different time. They are led by TA’s - graduate students getting their PhD in something similar to the class you are in. These are meant as time to go over the material, quizzes, answer questions in a more intimate and comfortable setting, etc. Typically, no new information is taught during recitations!!

  • Some classes have a supplemental lab where students apply what they are learning in their lecture class
  • Help rooms are open throughout the day and are staffed by graduate students as well as LAs, who are undergraduate students who have recently taken the class. Students can bring homework or class material and get help.

Show off iClickers and their uses: helps with attendance accountability and professors tracking progress, learning retention, and understanding

At CU boulder there are different general education class requirements. These are classes you take in order to make sure your education is well rounded.
Last semester, I took a Revolution in History: Russia, the USSR, and Ukraine class to fulfill a Ged-ed requirement. I think it was one of the most interesting classes I have ever taken. We talked about why revolutions occur and the effects they can have.

Students have an academic advisor for each major/minor that they declare. Academic advisors are there to help with class selections (making sure students stay on track), major switching, and minor/certificate additions. Each advising center offers drop-in availability and the option to schedule appointments.
First year advisors contact you the summer going into your first year.
At the beginning of your second year, you will be assigned an advisor for every major and minor you are pursuing.

If you are still exploring what you want to major in, the Program in Exploratory Studies (East building, second floor of CASE)
Students who are either exploring courses of study, deciding on a major, or attempting to gain admission to one of the more competitive degree programs. Home to approximately 25% of incoming first-year students

I highly recommend checking out our unique academics; for example, can get a certificate in hip hop studies, Animals & Society, to Lighting Design

● We are an R1 Research Institution
Almost every professor is conducting research at CU amd You can get involved in this research as a student!

One fun fact: 5 Nobel laureates in our history, 4 in physics, 1 in chemistry (2 still teach here:)

Folsom Field

A

D1 Varsity Football, part of Big 12 conference, coached by Deion Sanders or better known as Coach Prime!

The stadium holds just over 50,000 people - the largest college stadium in Colorado

Gameday: Campus fills with tailgates of both students and alumni; CUnit: student section–awesome organization to join ● Competitively priced student tickets; season pass for both Men’s Football and Basketball, all other sporting events are free to CU students.

Ralphie: CU’s female live buffalo mascot. We just retired our 5th Ralphie named Blackout because she was running too fast.

Ralphie runs up to 25mph and is considered one of the best traditions in college football. She lives at an undisclosed location off-campus due to theft concerns. Ralphie VI is named Ember!

Ralphie Runners: They are D1 varsity student-athletes and run with Ralphie and care for her year-round.

Transportation: Every student is given an RTD transit pass that works for buses around Boulder and into Denver, shuttle straight into DIA (Denver International Airport), bus to local ski resorts

Walkable & bikeable campus: can find all kinds of modes of transportation on campus like bikes, skateboards, and scooters. Able to get bikeshare (called Boulder Bcycle), free for 1 hour for CU students (electric assist bikes)

Parking: Can buy a parking pass as a first-year student. Parking lot preference is based on a first come, first serve basis. Costs change depending on the year.

ROTC: If you are interested in military service while getting your degree at CU, we host Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, and Space Force ROTC on campus full time. These departments are located inside the stadium if you are interested in joining or have further questions. Each of these departments allows you to try it out before committing to any type of service.

Chip: “Cartoon” mascot, different from Ralphie

Ralphie Statue: It is a tradition to rub the horns for good luck before a test, but you must NEVER mount/ride Ralphie because it is seen as bad luck. Some say that she faces East to intimidate one of our rivals, The University of Nebraska.

Student Recreation Center

A

The facility has over 300,000 square feet of recreation and fitness activity space.

LEED Platinum building (most environmentally friendly building). Some sustainable features include solar panels, sustainable cooling and heating systems, UV-sensitive lighting, and the heat that is removed to freeze the ice rink is used to heat the pools.

The Buff Pool and Patio: CU is the only college to have a pool in the shape of our mascot!

I am a huge fan of the rec! We will see this when we go inside in a moment, but the beginning of my first year at CU, me and my friends decided to get a semester membership to the rock climbing gym. The first couple of weeks I was super into it….

Q

Inside the REC

A

Access to the Rec Center is included in student fees for full tuition(time)-paying students. Exceptions to this include:

BeFit Classes: There are about 65+ classes offered every week. During the first week of school and finals week, all classes are free to attend; after that, there is a small membership fee. $75 Classes include Zumba, Yoga, Kickboxing, Cycling, pilates, and even Paddleboard Yoga

Ice Rink: Boulder’s only ice rink is housed in the rec center, and it offers unique opportunities for skating, sports, and group skating parties. Skates are available to rent for $3, otherwise, you get free skating if you bring your own skates

Climbing Gym: The 7000+ square ft. wall has a top rope, lead climbs, and diverse terrain for bouldering. Pricing for this gym is extremely competitive compared to any rock gyms in the area, and this is a great way to try new things. The handles on the routes are changed every 2 weeks to make new paths and keep things fresh. Semester Pass $30, Semester Shoe Rental Pass $24

Intramural Sports: Intramurals are recreational CU vs CU weekly sporting games and events. Intramural sports range from traditional soccer, tennis, etc. to the more interesting sports of broomball and inner tube water polo. You need to buy the Intramural Membership Pass which is $25 per semester for unlimited leagues and tournaments.

Club-level sports: These are competitive teams that compete against other intercollegiate teams. CU Boulder currently offers over 30 different sports clubs. Most teams require tryouts, and these are more time-intensive than intramural sports are. Club sports are similar to high school varsity-level sports. Membership fees depend on the sport

Outdoor Pursuits: This provides a gateway for students to enjoy the outdoors. They provide help with both personal trips and informative clinics.

Outdoor Equipment Rentals: various types of equipment for various amounts of time.

Adventure Resource Center to help students plan their next trip.

Norlin Library

A

This is the largest of the 6 libraries on campus.
Floor levels: The bottom floor is normal conversation level and then it gets quieter as you go up with the top floor being silent.

My favorite place to study is actually on the path we are about to walk through. There are HUGE wooden tables and I like to spread out my study supplies, I can be there for hours.

Laughing Goat Cafe – This is a coffee shop located within the library, and it serves busy students and faculty. Hours are typically 8am-6pm. NOT AS LONG AS THE LIBRARY IS OPEN

Writing Center – This is a great resource for all students of all majors and skill levels. They can help at every stage of the writing process from brainstorming through revision until a final copy. Services are free to all CU students, faculty, and alumni. They continued offering services remotely as well.

Research Advisors – There is a librarian dedicated to every major who can help with research and finding resources. They are all listed on the library website with their email and there are ways to set up appointments with them as well. This was also available remotely.

Office of Information Technology – On-campus free IT support dedicated to supporting students, faculty, and staff. BuffTechs is OIT’s virtual and walk-in desktop support service with offices in CASE or Norlin Library.

we have both Macs and PCs in the libraries and the campus accommodates both.

Study rooms – We check out study rooms to work on group projects or study in a private place with friends. Each study room is equipped with a projector as well to enable practicing presentations.

With more than 12 million books, the University Libraries system on the CU-Boulder campus is the largest library collection in the Rocky Mountain region.

Printing - you must pay for it but there are many printers in the library (8 cents a page)

Last semester right before finals week, me and friends went on a study crawl, were we work up at 7am went to every single study space we could think of around campus! It ended up being super productive and we have already planned to do it next year.

We’re about to walk in, as a reminder students are studying so try and stay quiet as you walk through

Norlin Quad

A

Right now we are in the orignial campus established in 1876, the same time when the university was established. - Point out Old Main- the oldest building on campus - is currently under construction because the foundation was as old as the building, and it needed a facelift

When living off campus you can also find apartments yourself, however do not worry, it is super east. Off-Campus Housing and Non-Residence Hall Options:
- Ralphie’s List is the University’s resource for off-campus housing, including roommates, subleases, and more. All listings have been vetted by or are affiliated with CU
- Bear Creek Apartments - Another Housing option through CU, located in the Williams Village (Will Vill) neighborhood. Designed for upperclassmen and are full apartments

Many students choose to get apartments or houses in an area called university hill, located ___
University Hill is a business district with a lot of restaurants, Greek Life, and housing. The food on the hill is exceptional: I highly highly recommend you get food there after the tour! if you need any recommendations lmk!

“President Obama went to The Sink before a speech on campus and had a student spill a Rush Bowl on his suit. He had to change and was late to a speech at the CU Events Center that night.”

Greek life: Around 12-15% of CU Students are involved in a Greek Organization, so it is not so large that you are pressured to join, but it is big enough to provide a strong community for those who want to be involved. There are 19 active chapters associated with CU, including sororities, fraternities, professional organizations, and co-ed Greek life

There are additional “off-campus” fraternities/sororities that are not officially recognized by the university

Safety on campus: CU has its own police department, called CUPD
- CSOs - campus safety officers walk around all night ensuring students’ safety and making sure all appropriate doors are locked when they are supposed to be
- CU Night ride - established by the student government to provide free transportation around Boulder to students every evening.
- Campus LED Lights - Can call to report out: “Even at night our campus isn’t dark.”

MY CU story

MY STORY

Remind them they will receive a survey via email.

o The best ways to get more feedback are to remind guests of the survey and to make connections with individual guests throughout tour!

· Point them towards their cars (at CASE) or wherever they need to go.

o Remind them there is a counselor on duty on the 4th floor of CASE to answer any lingering questions (9-5 weekdays, not an option on Saturdays).
