Tourist
A person who makes a trip outside their usual environment for leisure/purpose
Tourist generating region
A region where tourists come from.
[and where people and businesses that offer tourism products and experiences are based]
Transit route(region)
The region or route a tourist travels through to reach their destination.

Domestic tourist
a tourist that travels to their own country
International tourists
tourists that travel abroad to another country.
How availability of transit routes influence the volume and direction of travel
When there is a limited or inconvenient transit route, the volume of travel between the regions might be low.
When there are more transit routes available, the volume of travel might increase.
When there are convenient or attractive transit routes available, the direction of travel might change.
Push factor at generating region
Factors that cause a tourist to want to leave the generating region.
Reasons: may caused by stressful work environment, unpleasant living environment
Pull factors at destination regions
Qualities in tourist destination.
Reasons: places of scenic beauty, special events and attractions, facilities and amenities
How does tourism interact with nature, communities and economies within local environment and beyond?
When tourists visit a nature park and irresponsibly leave behind waste, the environment may be degraded.
When tourists pay local villagers to teach them how to create traditional pottery, they generate revenue for the villagers. This contributes to the local economy and helps preserve local tradition.

Motivation to travel, Ability to travel and mobility in travel.
how does an increase in the motivation to travel lead to the growth of tourism?
The need for relaxation.
Many people see travel as a way to rest and rejuvenate.
Ppl travel to diff destinations and engage in tourist activities to relax
[like seeking nature to escape urban enviro]
Example: A survey found that one of the main reasons British tourists visit Phuket, Thailand, an island famous for its scenic beaches , is to rest and relax.
How does the increased ability to travel lead to the growth of tourism?
[refers to the conditions that allow an individual to make trips]
Increase in leisure time.
refers to the time when ppl are free from work responsibilities
Since 1950s, governments and businesses gives ppl more leisure time
This comes in the form of increased paid leave, more public holidays, and shorter working weeks, which give people more time to travel.
The increase paid leave also increases the ability of worker to finance their travel.
Example: in 2015, the Chinese government encouraged employers to give workers half a day of paid leave on fridays during the summer months to help boost domestic tourism.
How does the increase of mobility leads to growth of tourism ?
Expansion of public transport services and infrastructure
More countries are constructing transport infrastructure such as roads, railways and airports.
Connectivity between countries has increased.
Tourists can travel more places in much shorter times.
Example: the opening of Changi airport terminal 4 means that there can be more flights from other parts of Asia to Singapore, making travel within the region more convenient.
