What is the definition of tourism?
Travelling to and staying in places outside your usual environment for not more than one consecutive year for leisure business and other purposes.

What is Ecotourism?
- Ecotourism is a sustainable form of tourism the focuses primarily on experiencing and learning about nature.
- It managed to be low-impact, non-consumptive and locally orientated.
- It typically occurs in atural areas.

- involve the locals by respecting their culture, sharing profits of tourism create jobs.
What is the second key principle?
Minimal negative impact on environment. Help conserve nature areas.

Educate tourists and locals on sustainability. Raise awareness of the environment.

- More money gets invested in places that people visit.
- Local governments are paid more money in tax
- Can reduce poverty in LIC countries
- Locals can earn money by catering to the needs of tourism.
Reasons for tourism to be a bad thing.
- more flights means higher emissions of greenhouse gases.
- Pollution levels increases as authority struggle to deal with waste.
- House prices increase and there is often the house shortage for locals.
- Shops and restaurants only cater to tourists.
- Tourist destinations become very overcrowded

- Health scares
- War / political unrest

- Changes in fashion
- Natural disasters

Why are health scares a decline for tourism?
- The COVID-19 pandemic provides a great example of how health scares and put a halt to tourism.
- For the first time, the global tourism industry has been hugely affected by the same health issue.
- employment in accommodation for visitors fell by 21.5%
Why is war / political unrest a declined for tourism?
- what in the region can cause the closing down of borders halting tourism.
- many years after Taurus cannot feel safe visiting that country.
Why is Terrorism a decline for tourism?
- in a similar way to war, if terrorist attacks have happened or are expecting in a country then tourist are much less likely to visit.
- for example the number of people flying significantly dropped after 9/11 in 2001
Why is changes in fashion a decline for tourism?
- as with anything what people want from holiday changes overtime.
- for example during the 1970s and 80s a trip to Spain to sit on a beach for a week was mostly peoples dream getaway, however this is no longer the case.
Why is Natural disasters a decline for tourism?
- natural disasters can cause huge destruction, tourism infrastructures and also lead to tourists being unwilling to visit due to safety concerns.
Why is recession a declined for tourism?
- A recession is caused when there is an economic downturn or a collapse in banking which leads to people having less disposable income.
- holidays are one of the first luxuries that people are likely to drop if money gets tight and this then impact tourism.
What are some reasons for the growth of tourism?
- development in air travel
- The Internet
- Package holidays
- more flexible working hours
- poorer countries becoming more developed
Why is the internet a factor for the growth of tourism?
The internet has led to a growth in global tourism because people can now buy and book holidays online instead of having to go to the travel agent. It is an easier and quick way to book holidays.
