Summarise the multiplayer effect

A

As more tourists visit, money is invested, countries become wealthier and more developed.This causes even more jobs, businesses and benefits, and so the cycle goes on.

A

Tourism brings jobs for local people

New leisure facilities for local people

Increase in GDP

New infrastructure put in place (roads and shops)

Huge earner of foreign exchange

Give some negative impacts of tourism

A

Industry dominated by large package holiday companies (money goes to them)

Poor paying and low skilled jobs for local people

Exploitation of local people - one earned often goes to companies over seas

Noise pollution, air pollution, loss of tranquility, increase in litter + waste

Pressure on frequently visited landscapes (coral reefs)

Give some of the positive impacts of tourism in the Maldives

A

Tourism brings $600 million a year

90% of governments revenue

Literacy rates increased (54% in 1977 to 99% in 2015).

Increase in jobs(11% of population employed in tourism)

Massively improved transport links

Give some of the negative impacts of tourism in the Maldives

A

Most of the resorts are owned by foreign companies meaning that the locals might not receive a high percentage because it leaks over seas

Greater inequality in wealth as shown by those who own the resorts to those who work there (annual wage £800)

Tourists activities such as snorkelling, fishing and diving are slowly deteriorating ecosystems (blasting is destroying coral reefs)

Give 4 ways in which tourism can be managed to promote sustainability

A

ECO TOURISM

  • Involves small groups to travel to natural and unspoilt environments
  • Educational, supports long term conservation and has minimal impact on natural environment.
  • Benefits local communities from income and respect for different cultures

SUSTAINABLE TOURISM
- Organised in a way that this level can be sustained in the future without creating irreversible environmental, social and economic damage to the receiving area

PROTECTED AREAS
- Prevents tourism + development from existing

QUOTAS
- Only having a certain number of people visiting per year

Give some ways in which the Maldives are promoting sustainability

A

Resorts to be built on uninhabited lands only

Resort buildings must be 5 meters back from vegetation line

No buildings are allowed to be taller than the tree tops

No more than 20% of an island can be built upon (includes water bungalows)

Desalination plants are required in each resort

resorts must have their own septic tanks

Resorts must have their own incinerators for rubbish

Why are people attracted to the Maldives as a tourist destination

A

The tropical climate temperature averages 26°C all year round (so the tourist season never ends)

Manta Point (place to see many rays), Banana reef is an excellent location for snorkelling, sunbathing, sandy beaches and SCUBA diving.

Wide range of marine life

Luxury spa resorts
