(35 cards)
Who is considered a tourist?
A tourist is a person who travels to and stays in a place outside their usual environment for more than 24 hours but not more than 1 consecutive year, regardless of travel purpose.
What are the two main types of tourism?
Domestic tourism: travel within a tourist’s own country. International tourism: travel outside of a tourist’s own country.
What are the key components of a tourism system?
The key components of a tourism system include tourist generating regions, tourist destination regions, and transit routes, all of which are interconnected.
How do transit routes influence travel between regions?
The volume and direction of travel between regions are influenced by transit routes. More transit routes increase travel volume and provide more options, reducing travel time and making travel more convenient.
What is a tourist generating region?
A region that is the source of tourists, where they come from, and where significant sectors of the tourism production system may be located or based.
What is a tourist destination region?
A region that attracts tourists, experiences the consequences of tourism development, and contains the primary elements of the tourism production system.
What is a transit route?
A transit route is the pathway a tourist travels through to reach their destination, which can include air, sea, or land transport.
What are push factors in tourism? (At tourist generation regions)
Push factors are conditions in the tourist’s home region that motivate them to travel, such as
- stressful work environment
- unpleasant living conditions ( like overcrowding and pollution)
- lack of recreational and entertainment options
What are pull factors in tourism? ( At tourist destination regions)
Pull factors are qualities in tourist destination regions that attract tourists, such as
- places of scenic beauty
- special events ( like concerts or festivals)
- attractions, facilities, and amenities that provide positive experiences.
How do push and pull factors work together in tourism?
Tourists are pushed from their home regions due to unfavorable conditions and pulled to destinations with attractive qualities, creating a movement of people from generating to destination regions.
What is the relationship between tourists, businesses, and organizations in tourism?
They are interdependent.
Tourists rely on businesses for services like hotels and tour agencies( accomodations and lodgings).
Businesses depend on tourists for revenue.
Organizations make recommendations to potential tourists, eg BHA British hospitality association
What are some positive impacts of tourism on the environment?
Tourism can raise awareness about conservation, provide funding for research and environmental protection, and encourage responsible travel that minimizes harm to nature.
What are some negative impacts of tourism on the environment and local communities
Over-tourism can lead to
- environmental degradation, pollution, loss of biodiversity -> fewer tourists -> livelihoods of locals affected negatively
- excessive use of natural resources
- economic downturn ( of tourist generating regions) -> fewer tourists -> reduction of incomes and loss of jobs in tourist destination regions
Eg maldives
What are some positive effects of tourism on the local community
Tourists require other services at the destination, giving the local communities an opportunity to be a part of the tourism system and provide for the needs of the tourists.
As a result, the economy of the local community benefits from the arrival of tourists.
+ Through CBT for locals to participate in tourism
Eg, floating villages at ha long bay vietnam, local communities gain employment and incomes of locals increase
How does an increase in the motivation to travel contribute to tourism growth?
More people travel for reasons like
- the need for relaxation
eg, ppl from England visit Phuket Thailand for relaxation, the coastal landscape provides the tranquility needed to relax
- the need to achieve personal growth and self-fulfillment: seek personal growth and self-fulfillment, seek spiritual growth, seek challenging or adventurous activities
eg, many cooking schools have sprung up in Bali to cater to tourists’ desire to learn more about Balinese cuisine
- the need to discover unique travel experiences
eg, growing popularity of lesser-known tourist destinations like Antarctica
How does increase in ability to travel lead to growth of tourism
Ability to travel - conditions that allow an individual to make trips
Growth in disposable income, increase in leisure time
Is also facilitated by business innovations in tourism-related industry, lower transport costs and accomodation costs
How does an increase in disposable income affect tourism?
Higher disposable income allows people to spend more on travel. As incomes rise, more people can afford vacations, leading to increased tourism numbers.
Eg, the number of people travelling out of Chinese in 2019 reached near 155 millions, 3x as many as 2010 due to increasing income
How does increase in leisure time contribute to tourism growth?
When people have more paid leave, they have both the time and financial ability to travel, increasing tourism demand.
Eg, in 2015, the Chinese gov encouraged employers to give workers a half day, paid off on Fridays during the summer months to encourage people to travel during the weekend within the country, this enhanced people’s ability to travel and domestic tourism resulting in growth of tourism
What role does business innovation play in tourism growth?
Innovations such as online booking platforms, budget airlines, and ride-sharing services have made travel more affordable and accessible, boosting tourism.
How do lower transport costs impact tourism?
International tourism has become increasingly affordable
Larger carrying capacity of aircrafts increases the economies scale of the flight, lowering the cost of transport for the traveller
Eg, Budget airlines like AirAsia offer significantly lower prices, making travel affordable for more people, increasing international tourism numbers.
How does increase in mobility to travel lead to growth in tourism
Mobility to travel - the ability to move around easily and conveniently to tourist destinations
- expansion of public transport services and infrastructure
- introduction of new modes of travel
- increased private car ownership
How does increased private car ownership influence tourism? ( Mobility to travel)
Owning a car provides flexibility and convenience, allowing people to travel more frequently within their own country, increasing domestic tourism.
eg, in India, car ownership has increased exponentially. People drive their cars and go enjoy mountain scenary or visit holy sites
How does introduction of new modes to travel lead to increased mobility to travel
Tourists can travel faster by land, sea and air
Eg, in the past a conventional train would take 6 hours and 40 minutes to travel from Tokyo to Osaka. Now, a skinkansen bullet train only takes 3 hours and 10 minutes
This led to significant increased tourism in cities that are served by the train
How does expansion of public transport services and infrastructure lead to increased mobility to travel?
Constructing transport infrastructure such as roads, railways and airports means that connectivity with different parts of a country has increased. Tourists can travel to more places in much shorter times
Eg, opening of changing terminal 4 means that there can be more flights from Asia to Singapore, making travel within the region mroe convenient
