Toxicology Flashcards
(12 cards)
Toxicology definition
Deals with the adverse effects caused by the exposure of living organisms to chemical substances
Toxicology limitations
extrapolated from animals to humans –> significant uncertainty
Exposure pathways (3)
- Inhalation
- Ingestion
- Dermal contact
Administered dose
amount of toxic agent the body is exposed to
Intake/uptake dose
amount absorbed by the body
Target/effective dose
amount reaching the target organ
Contaminants rely on blood flow to reach organs + tissue
Distribution
Sub acute
Sub chronic
chronic
- 10 days
- 2wks-7wks
- 7 years - lifetime
Teratogenicity
pathological effect during the phase after implantation (first trimester)
Endocrine disruptors
mimic the action of naturally occurring reproductive + thyroid hormones
LD50 (mg/kg) - ingested
Lethal Dose (median) only 50% of organisms remained alive
LC50 - inhaled
only 50% of organisms survived
