Fat Emulsion Parenteral Nutrition
Isotonic, may be given through peripheral or central vein; good for DM patients; Additives should not be put into fat emulsion solution; Examine bottle for: layers, fat globules, froth accumulation-if present: send back to pharmacy; may contain egg (allergy); monitor VS every 10 mins for 1st 30 mins of admin; serum lipids are checked 4 hours after discontinuing the infusion
Complications of Parenteral Nutrition
- Air Embolism (Air entry occurs on IV tubing Changes; Tubing disconnection)
- Hyperglycemia (Infusion is too fast; Not enough insulin)
- Hypoglycemia (PN abruptly discontinued; Too much insulin)
- Hypervolemia (Excessive fluid given or too fast; Renal dysfunction; Heart Failure; Hepatic Failure)
- Infection (Poor aseptic tech; Catheter contamination; Contamination of solution)
- Pneumothorax (Inexact catheter placement)
