Trace Elements Flashcards
Fluoride:
Fluoride strengthens teeth, hardens tooth enamel and helps prevent tooth decay (see p. 15).
The NHS recommends brushing your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.
It’s found in fish, tea, fluoridated water and dental products (toothpaste and mouthwash).
Too much fluoride is toxic and can lead to brown-coloured teeth, bone problems and cancer.
Too little fluoride can lead to weak teeth and enamel, which leads to tooth decay.
Iodine:
lodine is needed to make some hormones used by the body.
It’s found in seafood, dairy foods and vegetables.
A serious lack of iodine can cause goitre (neck swelling) and complications in unborn babies.
