Traction Passout Flashcards
(78 cards)
Describe the basic principles of the air production system
Air is drawn by the compresser which then passes it to the engine stop cylinder and throttle air actuator. Then on to the main reservoir tank, pressure is controlled by a compressor governor which dumps excess air to atmosphere via the purge valve. Upon leaving the main res tank air is passed to the distribution system via MRPIC
Describe the basic operation of the hydrostatic system
A reservoir tank supplies oil to 2 hydrostatic pumps one which drives the radiator and the other tank drives the alternator
Describe what parts of a turbo require air
Doors, suspension, Engine, Gearbox, Horns, Windscreen washers/Wipers, Uncoupler, Parking Brake, Toilet and Sander
Describe max speed of 165/166
Potential problem with overspending
165/0 - 75mph
165/1 - 90mph
166. - 90mph
Unit will suffer damage to transmission
Describe what happens when the Train Control MCB trips in the leading cab, the effects on the train and the risk if unable to reset.
An emergency brake application Flashing passcom, no sound Door interlock red on FIP Parking Brake and TCA light out on FIP GSMR and PA out If unable to reset the cab is out of use operate PBIC and BCIC on unit affected. Assistance required from front, passengers moved to assisting unit, driver should ride in the rear cab to operate EPBAC. In leading cab of assisting unit isolate passcom, traction interlock and EBS Max speed 5mph
Describe Purpose of EBS and the risks operating this equipment and when is it necessary.
The EBS gives an emergency brake supply when necessary to isolate the normal braking systems. This is for emergency use only and set must be taken out of use immediately line is cleared.
Describe the effect of Train Control MCB tripping in the rear cab.
An emergency brake application
Flashing passcom, no sound
Door interlock red on FIP
Flashing general fault light
If unable to reset the cab is out of use operate PBIC and BCIC on rear cab. Passengers moved to another coach, lock coach out of use.
Competent person should ride in the rear cab to operate EPBAC. In leading cab of unit isolate passcom, traction interlock and EBS
Max speed 5mph
Describe why an engine might revert to idling other than as a result of normal shutting off power and what action to take.
High coolant temperature
High transmission temperature
Unit declared a failure unless berthed and given sufficient time to cool
Describe what happens when the Local Control MCB trips in the leading cab
Engine will stop with no stop indication, no other effect except a loss of power.
Unit taken out of service if unable to reset.
Describe the purpose of the Door Traction Interlock and what actions and risk to take on isolation.
Traction Interlock ensures all doors are closed and secure prior to power being available. Isolated Traction Interlock may have a potential for door not to be closed and power being taken.
Describe what to do if a General Fault light is flashing on the desk.
Track Circuit Actuator
Parking Brake or Transmission ( generator MCB on some 166)
Describe what happens when the Main Air Reservoir Gauge is falling, causing the brakes to apply. How would you deal with the leak.
Close MRPIC and stop engine. Leak should die down and stop. Leave MRPIC isolated restart engine and continue journey.
Describe what action to take if the Earth Circuit Breaker trips.
Reset once, then enter into the fault book.
Describe what action to take if the OTDR fault indicator goes to red. What is wrong?
Inform signaller OTDR not recording.
Describe what action to take if an Air Suspension bag deflates what should you do? And what is the maximum permitted speed following isolation?
Isolated ASRIC, drain all 3 surge tanks
45mph with passengers, linespeed if ECS
Describe what action to take if the Passcom is pulled, what indications would you receive in the cab and how do you reset.
Buzzer sounding and flashing passcom light, press the yellow button by the DSD
You get an emergency break application, flashing passcom, door interlock light red, general fault light flashing red. What’s happened
Train control tripped in rear cab
Describe the maximum number of cars that can be formed together and why?
12 due to the fact that the electrical feed from the front cab won’t reach more than 12 coaches.
Describe what action to take if you were unable to get Traction Interlock and you have seen that a pair of doors had not shut correctly what would you do?
Check the chrome handle hadn’t been operated (butterfly handle) check door for obstructions, push doors closed.
State how you would isolate the DSD and what you are required to do after you have isolated it. What are the risks with running without a DSD
Use master key, isolate Vigilance then DSD. Inform signaller.
The DSD will not operate in the event of the driver becoming incapacitated.
60mph
State what indications would you have if the TCA had failed on a vehicle and how it would affect the train?
Flashing General Fault light in leading cab. Cantrail light and TCA fault light lit on affected car. Reset MCB 3x.
Break glass bar to isolate TCA
Inform signaller if affected car is front or rear
Name the isolation cocks and their purpose that are located up the flap on the DA side of the cab.
Cab Door IC Windscreen/Washer IC Horn IC Uncoupler IC Parking Break Application IC Parking Break Bypass valve Cock
Describe what action to take if the engine stop light is illuminated
Attempt to restart engine at first opportunity (neutral). If engine will not restart further investigation required.
Check coolant, engine oil
Describe what action to take if the fire alarm sounds
Can trail light illuminated on affected car. Check fire is out. If not use manual fire handle, and/or fire extinguisher. Once fire is out isolate engine and isolate fire system on AFFECTED car. Move passengers to other cars, lock and isolate doors and if no one is available to ride in vehicle, stop frequently to check affected car.
