Trading Around the World

A

-Yankee Traders travel the world looking for a profit
-Some even traded New England ice for silk and spices
-Empress of China- 1st American ship to trade with China-traded our ginseng for silk and tea.
-Yankee Traders go to the Pacific Northwest 10 years before Lewis and Clark. Many were from Boston-gave them the nickname.
-Mostly bought furs to trade with China

War with Tripoli

A

-Barbary States along northern coast of Africa
-We paid a bribe to not be attacked
-Early 1800s- Tripoli wants more money, Jefferson refuses. Tripoli declares war on us and we blockade the port of Tripoli
-The ship “the Philadelphia” runs aground, Tripoli takes it over, imprisons our sailors and plans to use our ship against us.
-Stephen Decatur- American Navy officer that boarded “The Philadelphia” and burnt it so no one could use it.
-US Marines march 500 miles to the coast of Tripoli-lasts until 1805 and Tripoli promises to not interfere in our trade again

-US benefits, trades with both nations
-How do England and France respond?
-British kidnap American Sailors, force them to sail in British Navy- called Impressment

Limits on Trade

A

-Jefferson wants to avoid war- Washington’s precedent
-Embargo Act passed in 1807
-Madison replaces it with the Nonintercourse Act- can trade with everyone except Britain and France
