Train Order Systems Flashcards
(35 cards)
What is the object of the train order system?
To prevent more than one train being in a single line section at the same time.
What boards are used to identify the entrance to and exit from train order territory and to identify crossing stations/loops and intermediate sidings?
Train Order Working Boards. These are red reflectorised boards with white lettering. The words ‘Commence Train Order Working’ or ‘End Train Order Working’ appear on the board, according to the direction it is facing.
What does the term train order territory mean?
The whole of the single line over which trains are governed by train orders is termed train order territory.
What does the term single line section mean?
Is defined as the portion of line between crossing stations, loops or block point locations.
What does the term station limits mean?
Station Limits is defined as the portion of lines extending between opposing home signals.
Note: There are no defined station limits at:
a. Block Points
b. Intermediate Train Order locations
c. Unattended Crossing Loops using trailable point machines
Where must vehicles be stationed while the ground lever is being operated at trailable points?
I don’t know
What is the procedure when a train is required to shunt at an intermediate siding locked by master key?
When a train is required to shunt at an intermediate siding locked by a master key, the following procedure applies:
a. The driver must be issued with the master key when receiving the train order for the section
b. The number of the master key must be shown on the Train Order.
b. On arrival at the intermediate siding, the competent worker must obtain the master key from the driver to enable the shunting to be performed
c. On completion of the shunting, the Competent Worker must, after removing the master key and testing the points, hand the master key to the driver, who must obtain permission from the Train Controller for the train to depart, or do so at the first opportunity.
What is the train crew’s duty when required crossing another train at an unattended crossing loop?
What is the driver’s duty when entering and exiting a train order territory provided with electronic end of train detection?
When are train orders issued?
Train orders are issued under the following circumstances:
a. Before departing a train order location or block point, providing one has not been issued for that single line section
b. If a train order has been issued for a train and the leading locomotive or any other instructions are incorrect or changed, in which case a cancelling (fresh) train order must be issued.
What information is on a train order?
The driver must check the following details are completed:
a. train order number
b. time of issue
c. date
d. train number
e. locomotive number
f. station or loop where issued
g. interpret the instructions relating to the train movements
h. details of any train orders issued to opposing trains
i. driver’s name and time when repeated back.
What are the driver’s duties in relation to the issue and use of train orders?
When the driver receives a train order direct from the train controller:
a. the train must be stationary
b. the Train Controller completes a Train Order in the Train Controller’s book
c. the Train Controller dictates the Train Order to the Driver
d. the Driver completes a Train Order in duplicate
*in ink
*in block letters
*on the prescribed form 2355
e. the Driver repeats the contents of the Train Order back to the Train
Controller to ensure correctness
f. the original copy remains on the locomotive and the duplicate copy is left in the driver’s book
g. the Driver must understand the train order before the train enters the section.
How is the object of the Train Order system accomplished?
The object is accomplished as follows:
a. When trains are proceeding in the same direction, by the Train Controller not issuing a Train Order for a second train to follow, until:
1. the first train has arrived complete at the Attended Crossing Station,
Intermediate Terminal Station or Train Order Terminal Station in
advance, or
2. has departed complete from a Block Point, Intermediate Train Order
Station or Unattended Crossing Loop in advance
b. When trains are travelling in opposite directions:
by the driver not proceeding beyond the crossing station/loop
indicated on the Train Order until in possession of a fresh Train Order
for the section ahead.
A Train Order must not be issued for the forward section until the opposing train has arrived complete and clear of the section, and its Train Order has been fulfilled.
What is a train order?
The authority for a train to proceed between crossing stations, loops or block point locations and is issued by the Train Controller.
What are locations within Train Order Territory?
a. Terminal station
b. Attended crossing station
c. Intermediate Train Order station
d. Unattended crossing loop
e. Attended crossing loop
f. Intermediate Terminal station
g. Block point
h. Identifiable location
What is a terminal station?
Is a station where Train Order Working commences or ends. For example, Seymour or North Bendigo.
What is an Attended crossing station?
Is a station where a Signaller is on duty to place the fixed signals to STOP for a cross or a pass movement and is permitted to receive the Train Order and deliver it to the Driver. For example, Kerang when attended.
What is an Intermediate Train Order station?
Is a non-crossing location between two crossing stations / loops, where it can be identified that a train has arrived complete, to permit a follow-on movement. For example, Kerang when unattended.
What is an Unattended crossing loop?
A loop where opposing trains may arrive into separate tracks at the same time, via trailable points. For example, Warrenheip.
What is an Attended crossing loop?
A loop where opposing trains may arrive into separate tracks at the same time, via trailable points, where a Signaller is provided to assist with operational requirements. For example, Warrenheip when attended by a signaller.
What is an Intermediate Terminal station?
An Intermediate Terminal station is a crossing station at which the fixed signals are required to be held at the Stop position for lengthened periods. For example, Swan Hill.
What is a Block Point Location?
A Block Point Location is an intermediate location in the section to which a Train Order may be issued. It is used for follow-on movements, or to advance a train to the block point location if local movements at the location ahead have fouled the single line.
What is an Identifiable location?
A location in a single line section indicated by a board consisting of a reflective triangle placed parallel to the track, or a name board on the platform, where a fresh Train Order can be issued. For example, Epsom or Eaglehawk.
What are Block Point Boards?
Block point signs are reflective boards with the location name and the words “BLOCK POINT” in black lettering. There are two types of block point boards in use.
