What is a blood transfusion?
A
A form of fluid replacement that replaces cellular & protein components of blood

Potential dangers of blood transfusions (4)

- Allergic & immune-mediate reactions
- Thromboemboli
- Disease transfusion
- Volume overload

Blood Transfusion Indications (3)
A
- Severe blood loss
- Bleeding disorder
- Need for plasma proteins

How long do blood transfusions last? Why?
A
- Effects are temporary, about 1-21 days.
- Underlying problem must be corrected.
- Why?
- Immune system will remove foreign blood
- Trans blood has short-life span, no nutrition available
- Collection, storage & trans damage blood

Canine blood donor qualifications (5)
A
- Negative for DEA 1, negative for Von Willebrand
- Current on vax & para control
- Neg for heartworms, Ehrlicha, Babesia, & Mycoplasma canis
- Greater than 50lbs
- Can donate q 4 weeks (Hct>40)

Feline blood donor qualifications (5)
A
- Blood type A (95% of need!)
- Neg for FeLV, FIV, Mycoplasma hemofelis
- Current on vax, para control
- Greater than 10lbs (not overweight)
- Donate q 4 weeks (Hct>35)
