2
Q

What is an ion?

A

A charged particle, formed when atoms gain or loose electrons to form a full outer shell.

Q

What are the properties of metals?

A

Good conductors of heat and electricity, they are malleable, strong, and have high melting and boiling points.

Q

What are the properties for transition metals?

A

-They mostly have the same properties as a normal metal, however they can form more than one ion, many forming colored compounds.
-Transition metals make very good catalysts. e.g The Haber process
- They react with chlorine to make metal chlorides and react with oxygen to form metal oxides.

16
Q

Where are transition elements located?

A

Between group 2 and 3, in the centre of the periodic table.

17
Q

What is the difference between Transition metals and group 1 elements?

A

-Group 1 metals are much more reactive then transition metals.
-Group 1 metals react more vigorously with water, oxygen or group 7 elements.
-Group 1 metals have lower melting points
-Group 1 metals are less dese, strong and hard than the transition metals.

18
Q

What is an example of Group 1 metals having lower melting points

A

-Manganese melts at 2000 degrees celcius wheras sodium melts at 98 degrees celcius.
