Transition metals Flashcards

(13 cards)

1
Q

What two elements are in the d-block of the periodic table, but are not transition metals? and why?

A

Scandium :- The Sc3+ does not contain a partially filled d-orbital (the ion has no d-orbitals)

Zinc :- The Zn2+ does not contain a partially filled d-orbital (the ion has a full d-orbital).

Q

What is the coordination number?

A

The coordination number of a transition metal complex is the total number of coordinate bond formed with the central metal ion. Silver comflexes have coordination number determines the shape of the complex ions.

Q

What is so special about the complex cisplatin?

A

It has both chlorine atoms on the same side. it is commonly used as a cancer therapy drug. It targets the cancer cells (which are chiral) the transplatin cannot be used for this.

There are side effects like hair loss so they have to be taken in small amounts to reduce these effects.

7
Q

What is the chelate effect?

A

In ligand substitution reactions, a positive entropy change is favourable as it means a more stable complex is being formed. Therefore, it is favourable to have more moles on the right of the reaction than on the left.

Q

What happens when you react a Cu(H2O)6 with 4Cl-?

A

Cu(H2O)6 + 4Cl(-) –> CuCl4 + 6H2O

Note This goes from a blue mixture to a yellow mixture AND the shape changes to a tetraherdral.

Q

What happens when you react Cu(H2O)6 with 4NH3?

A

Cu(H2O) + 4NH3 —-> Cu(H2O)2(NH3)4

Note It goes from a blue solution to a deep blue solution.
