transition metals, acid and bases, Flashcards

1
Q

Why is this reaction a lot more stable

A

Because you going from x particles to y particles.
So an increase in entropy
To reverse these reaction you would cuse a decrease in entropy which is very hard to do.

Q

Outline an experiment you could carry out to distinguish either copper, iron iron 2+,iron3+,alumnuim.

A

Put the solution into three separate test tubes.

Add sodium hydroxide solution dropwise using a dropping pipet.

Keep adding until excess and record any changes.

To the second test tube add ammonia solution using a dropping pipet- keep using until its in excess

excess.record changes.

Add sodium carbonate solution - record any changes.

Q

The observation you would record with sodium hydroxide.

A

All will form prepitates with sodium hydroxide.

Alumnuim hydroxide will dissolve in an excess sodium hydroxide(amphotertic)

Q

Reaction with sodium carbonate.

A

Alumnuim 3+ solution or fe 3+bubbles as C02 is formed.

Fe 2+ and Fe3+ behave identically in the other test but only Fe3+ gives off gas.
