translocation and transpiration Flashcards
1
Q
what is transpiration?
A
xylem tissue transporting water and mineral ions from the roots to the stems and leaves
2
Q
how has transpiration adapted to its function?
A
by having hollow tubes strengthened by lignin adapted for the transport of water in the transpiration stream
3
Q
what is translocation?
A
when phloem tissue transports dissolved sugars from the leaves to the rest of the plant for immediate use or storage.
4
Q
how does translocation work?
A
by being composed of tubes of elongated cells which allow cell sap to move from one phloem cell to another through pores in the end walls
