transpiration Flashcards
(9 cards)
What is transpiration?
The evaporation of water from a plant’s surface
How does the water leave the plant?
Through the stomata
What does the stomata allow to happen when they’re open?
Entry of carbon dioxide by photosynthesis
What are the environmental factors affecting the rate of transpiration?
Light, temperature, humidity and air movement
How does light affect the rate of transpiration?
During daylight, stomata open to allow carbon dioxide to enter which allows the water to evaporate and diffuse out the leaf
How does temperature affect the rate of transpiration?
Increase in temperature provides the water molecules with more kinetic energy allowing them to evaporate more easily
What is humidity?
Refers to the water vapour content of the air surrounding the plant
How does humidity affect the rate of transpiration?
Increase in humidity decreases rate of transpiration as it increases the water potential of the air so water potential gradient for diffusion decreases
How does air movement affect the rate of transpiration?
Removes water vapour from the leaf surface increasing the water potential gradient
