Transport systems in living things Flashcards

(32 cards)

Q

Why is there a need for a
transport system in humans,
plants & animals?

A

● Humans are complex organisms made up of millions of cells
● Most of these cells are far away from the outside of the organism and cannot get
materials directly from the environment
● A transport system is needed to take substances to all the cells and to carry waste substances
away

Q

What is osmosis?

A

The net movement of water molecules from a region of higher water potential to a region of lower water potential through a partially permeable membrane.

Q

osmosis is a type of diffusion that…

A
  1. Only involves water molecules

Q

What is the function of the heart?

A

● The walls of the heart are made of muscles
● Muscles contract and relax, allowing the heart to pump blood around the body

Q

What are Cornary arteries?

A

Coronary arteries are blood vessels that transport oxygen and nutrients to the heart muscles

Q

What harmful effects can occour in Cornary arteries?

A

● Fatty substances may build up inside them
● Blockage can lead to a heart attack
● Heart muscles may get damaged or die

Q

What are the characteristics of red blood cells?

A

● No nucleus
● Contains haemoglobin, which combines with oxygen and transports it around the body
● Bright red in colour when they carry oxygen
● Biconcave shape increases its surface area to volume ratio, allowing oxygen to diffuse into it at a higher rate

Q

What are the characteristics of white blood cells?

A

● Contains nucleus
● Lacks haemoglobin (colourless)
● Irregular in shape
● Larger than red blood cells
● There are fewer white blood cells than red blood cells
● Keeps body healthy by fighting disease

Q

What is the function of platelets?

A

Play a part in blood clotting
● prevents excessive blood
loss
● prevents entry of germs
into the blood

17
Q

What is the difference between the veins and the arteries?

A

veins carry blood to the heart while the arteries carry blood away from the heart

18
Q

What is the function of the artery?

A

Carry blood away from the heart

19
Q

What is the structure of the artery?

A

Arteries have walls which are thick, muscular and elastic.

20
Q

Why does arteries need thick, muscular and elastic walls?

A

-Arteries need to withstand the immense pressure of the blood as it is forced out of the heart. —-Thick elastic walls help to withstand the high blood pressure in the artery.

21
Q

What is the function of the vein?

A

Carry blood to the heart

22
Q

What is the structure of the vein?

A

-Walls of the veins need not be as thick and muscular as those of arteries
-Veins contain less elastic tissue than arteries

23
Q

Why does the vein need not have thick, muscular and elastic walls compared to arteries?

A

● Blood pressure in the veins is much lower than the blood pressure in the arteries
● Blood flows more slowly and smoothly in the veins

24
Q

What is the function of the capillary?

A

Carry substances to and from cells

25
What is the structure of the capillary?
Walls are made up of only a single layer of greatly flattened cells
26
Why is the diameter of capillaries is small?
RBCs move in single file, slowing blood flow which gives more time for exchange of gases
27
What is the function of the xylem?
● Transports water and dissolved mineral salts from the roots to the stem and leaves ● Provides mechanical support for the plant
28
What is the structure of the xylem like?
● Many dead cells fused together at the ends to form a long hollow tube ● Cells in the xylem vessels do not have cell membrane, cytoplasm, nucleus ● A woody substance known as lignin is deposited in the xylem walls to strengthen the hollow structure, preventing collapse
29
What is the function of the pholem?
● Transports manufactured food (sucrose, amino acids) from the leaves to other parts of the plant which is called translocation
30
What is drugs?
A substance that can affect body systems
31
What is an organ transplant?
● Medical procedure that is carried out to replace a damaged organ
32
How is an organ transplant carried out?
● Organ is removed from body of donor and placed into body of recipient
