What is the job of the circulatory system?

To transport substances around the body.

1

What is the heart and what does it do?

The heart is an organ and pumps blood around the body.

2

What is the heart made from?

Much of the wall of the heart is made from muscle tissue.

3

How many main chambers are there of the heart?

4

4

What are the 4 main chambers of the heart?

1. Left atria
2. Right atria
Ventricles

5

What are the physical features of Arteries?

Arteries have thick walls containing muscle and elastic fibres.

6

What are the physical features of veins?

Veins have thinner walls than arteries and often have valves to prevent back-flow of blood.

7

What are the purpose of stents?

Stents are used to keep arteries open that have begun to narrow and restrict blood flow.

8

What are capillaries?

Very narrow, thin-walled blood vessels which blood flows through.

9

What is blood?

Blood is a fissure and consists of fluid called plasma.

10

What is suspended in plasma?

1. Red blood cells
2. White blood cells
3. Platelets

11

What 3 things does blood plasma transport?

1. Carbon dioxide from the organs to the lungs

2. Soluble products of digestion from the small intestine to other organs

3. Urea from the liver to the kidneys

12

What do red blood cells do?

They transport oxygen from the lungs to the organs.

13

What are red blood cells packed with?

A red pigment called haemoglobin.

14

What happens to haemoglobin in the lungs?

It combines with oxygen to form oxyhemoglobin.

15

What do white blood cells have that red blood cells and platelets do not have?

A nucleus.

16

What do white blood cells do?

They form part of the body's defence system against microorganisms.

17

What are platelets?

Platelets are small fragments of cells.

18

What do platelets do?

Platelets help blood clot at the site of a wound.

19

What does xylem tissue do?

Xylem tissues transports water and mineral ions from the roots to the stem and leaves.

20

What is meant by the transpiration stream?

The movement of water from the roots through the xylem and out of the leaves.

21

What does phloem tissue do?

Phloem tissues carries dissolved sugars from the leaves to the rest of the plant, including the growing regions and the storage organs.
