trauma Flashcards
(34 cards)
___% of physical trauma from abuse occurs in head and neck
50
___% of motor vehicle accidents have facial injuries
50-70
when do you do oral/facial exam
after advanced trauma life support
evaluation steps
immediate assessment H&P radiographic exam assessment plan
3 things for extra oral exam
palpate inferior border/TMJ
ROM/excursive
V3 status
intra oral exam
FOM hematoma
malocclusion
alveolus
teeth
how long can you keep a tooth in viaspan
a week
how long can you keep a tooth in milk
6 hours
mobile tooth/displaced tooth stabilization period
3-4 weeks
root fracture stabilization period
2-4 months
mature reimplanted tooth stabilization period
7-10 days
immature reimplanted tooth stabilization period
3-4 weeks
steps for alveolar fracture tx
reduction
stabilization
RCT (w/i 1-2 weeks)
why do you do RCT within 1-2 weeks for alveolar fracture
prevent inflammatory root resorption/infection
soft tissue injury behind canthus line
there is only one branch of the facial nerve there, so will need to be repaired
soft tissue injury anterior to canthus line
facial nerve branches after this point so probably dont need to repair
tx for contusion
surgical exploration if arterial involvement is suspected
abx if wound contaminated
Subcutaneous or submucosal hemorrhage without breakage of the soft tissue
contusion
abrasions remove..
epithelial layer and papillary dermis
what is critical for abrasions
debridement
scrub with mild soapy solution, copious irrigation, balanced saline solution
cover with thin layer of abx
steps in laceration management
cleaning
debridement
hemostasis
closure
soaps which enter wounds may…
cause cellular damage and necrosis
avoid direct wound contact with:
alcohol
peroxide
provide-iodone
if you do make sure you use irrigation with BSS
which is better for debridement: pulsatile or constant flow
pulsatile
