What is Cognitive Behaviour Therapy?
- based on behavioural & cognitive techniques
- makes client aware of relationship between thoughts, emotion & action

What techniques do the therapists use?

What is Becks technique which is used in CBT?
- Assesment to see severity of condition
- Baseline established prior to treatment
- Client says how they perceive themselves, future & world
What is reality testing?
Ask client to demonstrate ability to succeed
What is Ellis’s Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy ?
- extends ABC to ACBDE, dispute & effect
- aims to identify irrational thought
- argues irrational thoughts are the cause of emotional distress
What disputes did Ellis identify?
- Empirical arguments: is your demand consistent with reality
- Logical arguments: is it logical that you can rate your whole self off of part of yourself
- Pragmatic arguments: what are the consequences of discomfort intolerance belief
How is CBT effective?
- Effective in reducing symptoms of depression & preventing relapse
- As effective as anti-depressants for many types
How is CBT not effective?
- Some cases are too severe so patient can’t motivate themselves into going to therapy
- Can take anti-depressants then CBT
- CBT isn’t sole treatment
What are the recovery rates for the different treatments for Depression?
- Drugs alone =55%
- CBT alone = 52%
- Drugs & CBT = 85%
How effective is CBT?
- Quality of therapist patient relationship makes biggest impact on success rather than treatment
- Focuses on here & now, not childhood experience
- Focusing on mind may minimise environment they’re living in
What are strengths of CBT?
- Client actively involved in recovery
- Not physically invasive
- Learn to help themselves
- It works
What are weaknesses of CBT?
- Client can form dependency on therapist
- Not effective to those resistant to change
- Not a quick fix
How does CBT affect the economy?
- More knowledge on treatments leads to more contributing members of society
- Depression will be the biggest disease
- If research shoes you’re less likely to relapse after CBT less people will stay off of work
