Treatment Flashcards
(34 cards)
Neisseria meningitides
Ceftriaxone
Cell wall synthesis inhibitor
E Coli
Trimethoprim
Inhibitor of folic acid synthesis
Staph aureus
Cellulitis - flucloxacillin
MRSA - vancomycin
Both cell wall inhibitors
Staph epidermis
Cellulitis - flucloxacillin
Cell wall synthesis inhibitor
Strep pyogenes
Flucloxacillin
Vancomycin if allergic to penicillin
C. difficile
Enteral Vancomycin or IV metronidazole (if enteral is unavailable)
Strep pneumonia
Mild - amoxicillin
Moderate - amoxicillin and doxycycline
Severe - cephalosporin and doxycycline
All cell wall synthesis inhibitors
Viridans streptococci
Surgical antibiotic prophylaxis
Haemophilia influenzae
Amoxicillin
Co-amoxiclav

Epstein Barr virus
Acyclovir
Varicella zoster
Acyclovir
Viral replication inhibitor
Hepatitis B
No cure - supportive treatment
Hepatitis C
Ribovarin and interferon
HIV
HAART
Adenovirus
Supportive treatment
Norovirus
Supportive treatment
(anti-pyretics, IV fluids)
Plasmodium falciparum
Quinine
Doxycycline
Candida albicans
Nystatin
Clotrimazole
Systemic: amphotericin B
Cellulitis
Flucloxacillin
Effective against both staph aureus and strep pyogenes
Beta lactam
Penicillin
Cell wall inhibitor
Tonsillitis
Penicillin V
Sepsis
Ceftriaxone
Sepsis six:
- senior help
- give o2 if below 92%
- send blood tests including culture
(eg ALT and AST tests, renal dysfunction tests, FBC, CRP, blood has to check lactate etc.)
- give IV antibiotics and consider source control (removal or drainage of source of infection)
- consider IV fluids
- monitor (urine output, observations)
Peritonitis
E. Coli, therefore trimethoprim
