TREATMENT Flashcards
(7 cards)
What are the treatments for MM?
- chemotherapy
- steroids
- anti myeloma drugs
- stem cell transplant in some dases
Why are corticosteroids used?
Controls inflammation caused by myeloma cells and stops WBC from going to swollen areas of body
How does thalidomide treat MM?
Causes the degradation of two transcription factors which are needed for growth and function
How does lenalidomide treat MM?
Vascular endothelial growth of myeloma cells is inhibited so blood vessels cannot form
How does daratumubab treat MM?
Attaches to the CD38 protein and activates immune system to kill them
How does bortezomib treat MM?
blocks proteosomes from breaking down proteins so the cell eventually dies
Why is a stem cell transplant done?
high dose chemo kills stem cells, so a transplant replaces the healthy ones destroyed by chemo
