Biomedical Therapy
A form of therapy mainly used on patients suffering from disorders more influenced by biology. Involves the use of prescription medications or medical procedures of the nervous system
Eclectic Approach
The use of many therapies and techniques to treat patients
Psychoanalysis
Sigmund Freud’s therapeutic technique of probing patients’ consciousness to draw conclusions of their mental state
Resistance
Blockage of free thought, which are believed to indicate defense against sensitive experiences
Interpretation
Both the therapist and patient must interpret what the thoughts mean, in order to gain insight
Psychodynamic Therapy
A form of therapy involving attempting to understand patients’ current symptoms
Insight Therapy
A variety if therapies aiming to improve psychological functioning by increasing the client’s awareness of underlying motives
Client-Centered Therapy
A humanistic therapy in which the therapist actively listens and returns feedback to the client, in a genuine manner
Unconditional Positive Regard
A caring, accepting, nonjudgemental attitude that promotes free thinking and expression
Behavior Therapy
Therapy based on the belief that problematic actions and behaviors are in and of themselves the problem, rather than a symptom
Counter-Conditioning
A form of classical conditioning in which a trigger stimulus is laired with a response that is intrinsically incompatible with the previous response to the stimulus
Exposure Therapies
Therapy involving exposure to a “negative” stimulus to gradually reduce a negative response
Systematic Desensitization
A type of exposure therapy that associates a plesant, relaxed state with gradually increasing anxiety producing trigger stimuli. Commonly used to treat phobias
Virtual Reality Exposure Therapy
The use of virtual reality for exposure therapy for situations that are too expensive, difficult, or embarrassing to do otherwise
Adverse Conditioning
An application of classical conditioning involving invoking a negative response to harmful stimuli by associating negative unconditional responses
Token Economy
An operant conditioning procedure in which people earn a token for exhibiting desired behaviors which can later be exchanged for prizes
Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy
A popular integrative therapy that combines cognitive therapy with behavioral therapy
Family Therapy
Therapy that treats the family as a system, and views unwanted behaviors with regard to that system
Meta-Analysis
The procedure of statistically combining the results of many different research studies
Psychotherapy
A form of treatment usually used for patients with learning-related disorders. Involves the use of psychological techniques to assist patients overcome difficulties and achieve personal growth.
Psychopharmacology
The study of drug effects on mind and behavior
Antipsychotic Drugs
Drugs that calm patients with psychoses
Tardive Dykinesia
Involuntary movements of facial muscles, toungue, and limbs
Antianxiety Drugs
Drugs used to combat anxiety and agitation
