treatment planning Flashcards
what should be included in an orthodontic diagnosis?
- Description of malocclusion - i.e classification
- Cause of malocclusion
- Is the cause Dentoalveolar or skeletal?
What aids in the diagnosis and treatment planning of skeletal based orthodontic problems?
Lateral Cephalogram
Why is correct orthodontic diagnosis important?
Orthodontic appliances have little effect on skeletal relationships, surgical intervention may be the best course of action.
What are the objectives of orthodontic treatment?
- Stable occlusion
- Functional occlusion
- Better aesthetic for occlusion
- facilitate other forms of treatment (crowns/bridges)
how should a treatment be staged?
- Plan around the lower arch
- decide on treatment in lower (non extraction or extraction?)
- Build upper arch around lower arch, aiming for class 1 incisor and canine relationship
- decide on molar relationship class 1 or full unit class 2
What should you look out for when examining the lower arch?
- crowding
- Angulation of canines
- Curve of Spee
- is space required?
- Extractions necessary?
what should you look out for when examining the upper arch?
- Crowding
* Angulation of canines
What should you look out for when examining the teeth in occlusion?
- Incisor relationship
- OJ
- OB
- Centrelines
- Canine relationship
- Molar relationship
How do you estimate the degree of crowding?
Space available - space required = discrepancy
